They are responsible for developing strategies, managing teams of organizers, and building relationships with stakeholders to achieve organizational goals. Senior Organizers also mentor junior staff, oversee event planning, and ensure that campaigns are effective and inclusive. Their role is critical in mobilizing people, advocating for change, and ensuring that projects are executed efficiently and successfully.

Job description

About Community Change and Community Change Action:

Community Change builds the power and capacity of low-income people,ย especially low-income people of color, to lead powerful and dynamic movementsย for social change. With our community-based partners, we bridge the grassrootsย and the national, supporting outsider strategies to disrupt the status quo whileย also building pathways to influence on the inside.

Our vision of a better world centers around the leadership of impacted people ofย color to move our work on the care economy, economic freedom, state power building, and immigrant rights.

This position also supports Community Change Action, an affiliated 501(c)(4)ย advocacy organization. While motivated by the same core values โ€“ equity,ย inclusion, and freedom โ€“ Community Change and Community Change Actionย operate independently of one another, and each organization has its own boardย of directors.

Position Description:

Community Change has been at the forefront of the child care movement asย grassroots-led campaigns secure growing investments in the child care system andย the workforce that supports it. We are seeking a Senior Organizer to support theย grassroots organizing of our core state partners to ensure directly impacted childcareย stakeholders -- including providers, parents, and families -- have a voice in shaping theย childcare system that impacts their lives. This Senior Organizer will also play a key roleย in the development and execution of a national campaign for universal childcare.

The Childcare Senior Organizer will provide coaching, technical assistance and otherย support to both existing grassroots partners and state-based organizing groups thatย want to join the childcare movement and who have a commitment to base-building,ย leadership development, and statewide strategic campaigns. The Childcare Seniorย Organizer will co-strategize with our organizing partners to develop and advanceย
campaigns at the local, state, and federal levels; help partners build and maintain theirย organizing infrastructure; brainstorm and test new base-building strategies; andย provide advice on navigating relationship building and coalition work.ย

As part of a team of organizers driving our child care work, this Childcare Seniorย Organizer will also help advance our efforts to win universal childcare, as well asย ensure that taxpayer funded investments reflect child care as a public good, and toย protect those investments from corporate and private profiteering. The rightย candidate for this role will have a track record of waging successful corporateย accountability campaigns, as well as the ability to teach and coach our organizingย partners to develop and execute campaign strategies that include the use of researchย to expose corporate tactics and misconduct, effective deployment of media andย messaging, stakeholder engagement, and execution of public accountability actions.ย A successful candidate for this role will have the ability to distill complex topics intoย accurate, accessible, and compelling presentations and help our partnersย communicate effectively to a broad range of audiences.

This role will primarily support organizations that are in states with more robustย campaigns, and travel is required.ย

Principal Responsibilities:

The primary job responsibilities for this position will include:ย
Coaching state-based organizing groups that work on childcare. Coaching willย include but is not limited to:

  • ย Assessing the strengths and challenges that face partner organizationsย in their childcare organizing work.
  • Supporting and advising partner organizationsโ€™ current campaign(s)ย strategies and/or development of strategic campaign(s);
  • Supporting partnerโ€™s base and power-building efforts related to theย childcare movement
  • Connecting partner organizations to internal Community Changeย resources or teams, like policy or communications, for strategicย campaigns and organizing support.ย
  • Drafting memos and plans communicating the opportunities and needsย of each state partner organization.

The core priority for this role is to advance organizing and campaign partnersย goals and build and provide strategic and technical support to strengthenย childcare organizing in states.
Discerning the level of coaching needed for each childcare partner. Someย organizations will have a high level of organizing, base building, and campaignย experience, while others will exhibit areas of growth in one or more of theseย areas. The responsibilities for this role include coaching organizations atย different stages of expertise and building strategic interventions and plans toย support them.
Working with the staff leadership of individual organizing partners toย strengthen their internal capacity to operationalize the systems and practicesย that provide foundational support for organizing work.
Helping lead Community Changeโ€™s private equity partner cohort, includingย facilitating collaboration across states, creating and implementing sharedย strategies, and identifying and building relationships with new organizingย groups and allies to grow the breadth and power of our work.
Serving as a liaison between assigned partners, the Community Changeย Childcare team, and our broader national movement, providing frequentย updates and communicating with members of our team, and connectingย partners to Community Changeโ€™s movement strategies, including nationalย days of action like our annual Day Without Child Care, which will likely have atย least 100 events nationwide in over 30 states this year.
Participating in and supporting a strong team culture where each person feelsย valued, there is accountability, there is celebration, clarity of purpose andย strategy, and cohesion with team partners on a national strategy.
Collaborating across teams at Community Change, including digital,ย communications, policy and advocacy, and electoral.

Qualifications:

At least 8 years experience as an Organizing Director, Campaign Director orย Executive Director at an organization where the primary theory of change isย grassroots organizing. This can include leadership roles within a progressiveย political campaign, non-profit, or union.
Senior-level understanding of organizing principles and experienceย implementing campaign strategies and tactics. Experience as the staff lead onย several campaigns, ability to share lessons learned from those campaigns, andย how you approached making challenging decisions.ย
Demonstrated commitment to racial, gender, economic, and social justiceย along with worker and community leadership.
Experience with training on organizing fundamentals and theory of organizing.ย
Strong communication skills, specifically the ability to write clearly andย concisely.
Ability to assess project outcomes and present solutions for improving theย project and its impact.
Experience with collaborative decision-making and experience leadingย coalitions.
Experience working with a regionally dispersed or remote team.
An ability to juggle multiple projects and work in a fast-paced environment.
A demonstrated commitment to meeting high standards and a history ofย getting things done despite obstacles.
Ambition, drive, and energy.
The ability to speak and write in fluent Spanish is a plus.
Experience with voter engagement and electoral organizing is a plus.
