What is a telecom expense manager?

Telecom expense managers are professionals or services responsible for tracking, analyzing, and controlling a company's telecommunications costs. They manage invoices, contracts, and usage for services like phone lines, mobile devices, internet, and data networks. Their goal is to optimize spending, ensure billing accuracy, and identify potential cost savings. Telecom expense managers often use specialized software and work closely with vendors to resolve discrepancies and negotiate better rates.

What are some common challenges telecom expense analysts face when managing multiple vendor contracts?

Telecom Expense Analysts often deal with the complexity of managing numerous vendor contracts, each with different billing structures, terms, and renewal dates. Keeping track of these details while ensuring accuracy in invoicing and identifying cost-saving opportunities can be challenging. Effective analysts typically rely on specialized software and strong organizational skills to stay on top of contract obligations and avoid costly errors. Regular communication with vendors and internal stakeholders is also essential to resolve discrepancies and optimize telecom spending.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a telecom expense manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Telecom Expense Manager, you need strong analytical skills, knowledge of telecom billing practices, and experience in finance or accounting, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with telecom expense management (TEM) software, spreadsheets, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems is typically required. Excellent attention to detail, negotiation abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are important for ensuring cost control, accurate billing, and efficient management of an organization's telecom resources.

If you're ready to start learning, growing and making an impact with a career in fintech, we'd like to know: Are you FIS?

About the Role:

This senior-level role helps to shape strategic direction for telecom expense management in a complex enterprise environment, ensuring strong financial stewardship, operational discipline, and vendor performance across voice, data, wireless, and mobility services. The position combines strategic oversight with hands-on execution, with accountability for budgeting, forecasting, invoice governance, contract compliance, and service optimization while influencing decisions that improve controls, reduce cost, and enhance overall service delivery.

About the team:

The FIS Network Team delivers enterprise and client telecommunications connectivity solutions worldwide. Our responsibilities span vendor strategy, network design, circuit provisioning, inventory management, and Telecom Expense Management (TEM). Comprised of wide area network engineers, telecommunications specialists, and expense management professionals, we oversee and optimize FIS's global telecom portfolio. Our mission is to provide world-class, reliable, and cost-effective telecommunications services that enable business operations, support client needs, and drive connectivity excellence across the enterprise.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Provide strategic direction and day-to-day accountability for enterprise telecom expense management across voice, data, wireless, and mobility services, with responsibility for vendor relationships, contract oversight, and service lifecycle management.
  • Own complex billing operations and multimillion-dollar telecom budgets, including forecasting, variance analysis, financial planning, and spend optimization.
  • Drive invoice accuracy, dispute resolution, approvals, payment governance, and contract compliance to strengthen financial controls and reduce unnecessary spend.
  • Set expectations with carriers and TEM providers by monitoring performance against service level agreements and key performance indicators to improve service quality and accountability.
  • Maintain visibility into telecom inventory, accounts, invoices, and service records to support accurate reporting and operational continuity across the environment.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and cost-saving opportunities through spend analytics, utilization reviews, and business-case evaluation.
  • Serve as a key point of coordination across internal stakeholders, suppliers, procurement, and cross-functional teams to resolve operational and billing issues while proactively managing risks, timelines, and communications.
  • Deliver executive-ready reporting and insights for budgets, vendor spend, procurement activity, and annual planning cycles.
  • Operate effectively in a high-volume, detail-intensive environment requiring strong business judgment, analytical rigor, and disciplined execution.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, Computer Science, Telecommunications, or a related field preferred. Typically requires 10+ years of experience in telecom services, telecom expense management, financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, auditing, or related operational support. The ideal candidate brings strong executive communication, analytical, and organizational skills, along with advanced Excel capability and experience with reporting and financial platforms such as PeopleSoft, ServiceNow, Tableau, or similar systems. Deep experience in invoice auditing, spend analysis, cost-benefit evaluation, ROI analysis, and vendor management is strongly preferred. Experience with telecom expense management platforms, particularly Calero or VeraSMART, is a plus.
