Job Description

This position can sit in either Irvine, CA or Carlsbad, CA

CDM Smith is one of the worldโ€™s top design, program management (PgM) and construction management (CM) firms, providing innovative and creative solutions for our clients and assisting them in achieving successful outcomes on their most important water, infrastructure, environmental and transportation programs. We currently provide owners agent services around the world with over 300 working full-time professionals who use world-class program controls, processes, and tools.

CDM Smith is seeking a strategic Senior Professional Engineer with substantial Construction Manager / Resident Engineer (RE) experience to join our team of accomplished professionals to expand and grow our services in the West Pacific Region. This individual will coordinate with Practice Leaders, Technical Delivery Mangers, and Client Service Leaders (CSLs) to establish a vision for growth of CM services with established clientele. The individual will plan, direct, and coordinate construction management opportunities ranging from large multi-discipline projects to moderately complex projects.

Responsibilities:

Our Program Services Group is seeking a thought leader to spearhead innovative, multi-disciplinary water and wastewater projects with a talented team of professionals at CDM Smith - a global leader in design, program management, and construction management. As one of the world's top firms, we provide cutting-edge, creative solutions that help our clients achieve successful outcomes across their water, infrastructure, environmental, and transportation initiatives.

As a strategic member of this team, you must have a proven track record of fostering relationships that create impactful opportunities for the growth of our CM services, including demonstrated experience in developing client connections.

This role serves as the lead construction manager, responsible for directing and overseeing the daily operations of the entire project or program team and managing the client relationship as the CDM Smith point of contact.

This role sits at the top of the CM organizational hierarchy, providing strategic leadership and direction.

As a strategic Senior Construction Manager / Resident Engineer (RE) and leader at the firm, you will be required to work closely with CSLs to identify new business opportunities, participate in client pitches, and provide strategic insights on construction feasibility, cost, and timing for proposed projects. You will also be required to define and advocate forward-thinking strategies that improve construction processes, efficiency, and outcomes; lead initiatives that encourage the adoption of emerging technologies, sustainable practices, or advanced project management methodologies; inspire colleagues and stakeholders to embrace new concepts, serving as a mentor and guiding the company toward improved industry practices; and actively share insights through conferences, publications, or partnerships to shape the future of construction management.

This position may require the candidate to be located on-site at a project away from their home office up to 100% of the time for the duration of a project.

Additional responsibilities are outlined below.

  • Managing client relations and stakeholder expectations: establish, build and maintain client relationships to deliver legendary client services. Serve as the primary CDM Smith point of contact between all stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder Communication: provide regular updates on project progress, address any concerns, and facilitate partnering and effective communication to ensure smooth project execution and successful completion.
  • Lead CM: direct and oversee the daily operations of the entire project or program team. This role sits at the top of the CM organizational hierarchy, providing strategic leadership and direction.
  • Project Oversight and Coordination: ensure all construction activities comply with design specifications, safety standards, and project timelines by closely monitoring site operations, coordinating with contractors, and resolving any technical issues that arise during the project lifecycle. Coordinate and control all construction management activities including CPM scheduling, claims management, project coordination, risk management, and quality management on large complex construction management assignment(s).
  • CM Innovation: Leverage innovative tools and methodologies to drive efficient project delivery, optimize resource management, and uphold exceptional quality and safety standards.
  • Technical Luminescence: Actively participate in professional societies, prepare and present papers at regional and national conferences, or publish articles in national publications.
  • Quality Assurance and Control: Conduct regular inspections (or oversee inspection team), review construction plans, and perform quality control tests to ensure materials and workmanship meet the required standards and specifications, documenting and addressing any deficiencies.
  • Build the project team (including teaming partners and subconsultants) and manage their duties and activities as the Lead CM. Communicate and interface with internal/external team members and authorities involved in the planning, design, and execution of construction activities.
  • Ensure that construction is completed in accordance with the Contract Documents and CDM Smith Quality Standards. Establish processes and procedures to reduce cost, limit risks and provide a safe work environment for our staff.
  • Mentor staff and contribute to the firmโ€™s knowledge management system.
  • Participate in the recruitment process to grow our team of CM professionals.
  • Perform other duties as required
Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of computer assisted design and drafting (CADD) 3D and 4D software and practices.
  • Knowledge of engineer principles of design.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft business software (excel, word, etc.).
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local regulations.
Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree.
  • 12 years of relevant experience. Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active PE license
  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM)
  • Experience in lead CM or RE role on a $100M+ construction project's
