What is a steward?

Most often, a steward job refers to a restaurant steward, also called a kitchen steward. A restaurant steward’s responsibilities are to assist a restaurant with cleaning, dishwashing, and restocking the kitchen and dining room. A steward can also be an employee on a ship, bus, or train whose duties are to provide food and drink to passengers. A ship’s steward is essentially the ship’s housekeeper and organizes and prepares meals on the ship. A steward can also refer to a data steward, which is an employee who governs a company’s data, or to an official who keeps order at a public event.

What does a steward do?

A steward is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and organization in kitchens, dining areas, or on ships and aircraft. Their duties typically include washing dishes, cleaning surfaces, managing waste, and sometimes assisting with basic food preparation. Stewards play a crucial role in ensuring hygiene standards are met and that the working environment runs smoothly for chefs and service staff. In hospitality or maritime settings, they may also help with serving guests and maintaining inventory of supplies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a steward, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Steward, you generally need knowledge of hygiene standards, basic food handling, and cleaning procedures, with a high school diploma often preferred. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, dishwashing machines, and relevant safety certifications like a food handler's permit is typical. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong time management are the soft skills that set top candidates apart. These skills ensure efficient kitchen operations, maintain safety and cleanliness, and support a positive dining experience for guests.

What are the most common challenges faced by stewards in a busy hospitality environment?

Stewards in busy hospitality settings often face challenges such as managing high volumes of dishware during peak service hours, maintaining rigorous sanitation standards, and coordinating efficiently with kitchen and service staff. The fast-paced environment requires strong organizational skills and stamina to handle repetitive tasks under time pressure. Additionally, stewards must be adaptable to shifting priorities and able to communicate effectively to ensure smooth kitchen operations.

While both roles involve cleaning and maintaining spaces, a Steward primarily focuses on food service areas and may hold certifications related to food safety, working mainly in hospitality and food industries. A Housekeeper generally handles cleaning and laundry tasks in hotels or private residences without specialized certifications. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find the right role based on their skills and career goals.

What do I need to work as a steward?

To work as a steward, you typically need good communication skills, the ability to work in a team, and physical stamina. Some positions may require food safety certifications or training in customer service, depending on the industry and employer requirements.

Job description

StewardEvery Moment Matters.

Every interaction at Populus has the power to leave someone inspired, not just by exceptional hospitality, but by a deeper connection to nature, community, and one another. Whether you are welcoming guests, preparing a meal, caring for our spaces, or supporting the team behind the scenes, your work helps bring our mission to life and makes you an essential part of a new species of hospitality.

A Rare Opportunity

At Crescent Hotels & Resorts, we believe exceptional hotels begin with exceptional people.

As a Stewarding Attendant, you will play an essential role in supporting the success of Populus' culinary and hospitality operations. You will help ensure that our kitchens, restaurants, and service areas have the clean, sanitized, and organized equipment they need to deliver an exceptional guest experience.

This role goes beyond traditional dishwashing. You will be an important part of Populus' sustainability efforts through the proper operation and care of our bio-digester, helping divert food waste and support our commitment to responsible hospitality.

How We Lead at Populus
  • Rooted in Nature
  • Generous
  • Curious

Your Impact

As a Stewarding Attendant, you will:

  • Wash, rinse, sanitize, and properly store dishes, glassware, silverware, cookware, and kitchen equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary dishwashing and stewarding area throughout each shift.
  • Operate commercial dishwashing and sanitation equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Support the kitchens, Pasque, Stellar Jay, Little Owl, and other hotel outlets with clean equipment and supplies.
  • Assist culinary and food & beverage teams with the timely movement and availability of clean dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and equipment.
  • Properly sort food waste and operate the hotel's bio-digester in accordance with established procedures.
  • Monitor the bio-digester and communicate any operational issues, unusual conditions, or maintenance needs to the appropriate leader.
  • Help ensure food waste is handled correctly so the bio-digester can operate efficiently and effectively.
  • Keep stewarding areas, floors, drains, sinks, equipment, and surrounding work areas clean and sanitary.
  • Complete routine cleaning of kitchen and back-of-house areas as assigned.
  • Assist with receiving, organizing, and storing stewarding supplies and equipment.
  • Handle chemicals and cleaning products according to hotel procedures and safety requirements.
  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, health, and safety standards.
  • Properly dispose of trash, recycling, and food waste according to hotel procedures.
  • Work closely with Culinary, Food & Beverage, and other hotel departments to maintain smooth daily operations.
  • Help with additional stewarding, kitchen, and back-of-house duties as assigned.
  • Support fellow associates and contribute to a positive, respectful, and team-oriented work environment.
Sustainability & Stewardship

Populus was built with the belief that hospitality can have a positive impact on people and the planet. Stewarding is an important part of that commitment.

As a Stewarding Attendant, you will have a hands-on role in our food waste diversion efforts through the proper use and care of the bio-digester. You will help ensure food waste is handled responsibly while keeping our kitchens and service areas operating efficiently.

Your attention to proper waste sorting, equipment care, cleanliness, and daily procedures directly supports Populus' commitment to more thoughtful and sustainable hospitality.

What Will Make You Successful

You are dependable, hardworking, and take pride in the details that guests may never see but that make exceptional hospitality possible.

You will bring:

  • Previous experience in a stewarding, dishwasher, kitchen, restaurant, hotel, or similar environment is preferred but not required.
  • A strong understanding of cleanliness and sanitation practices.
  • The ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in maintaining clean and organized work areas.
  • The ability to safely operate commercial dishwashing and kitchen equipment.
  • A willingness to learn and properly operate the hotel's bio-digester.
  • The ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established procedures.
  • A strong sense of responsibility when handling food waste, chemicals, equipment, and sanitation processes.
  • The ability to stand and move for extended periods and perform physical tasks associated with stewarding.
  • A positive attitude and willingness to support coworkers and pitch in wherever needed.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with team members and leaders.
  • A commitment to treating guests and fellow associates with courtesy and respect.
We Are Committed to Providing You With
  • Competitive compensation
  • Comprehensive benefits for eligible associates
  • Travel and hotel discounts
  • Career growth and development opportunities
  • A collaborative and inclusive team environment
  • The opportunity to work at one of Denver's most distinctive hospitality destinations
  • The opportunity to be part of Crescent Hotels & Resorts and the Populus team
At Populus, Every Role Is a Stewardship Role.

Every decision, interaction, and contribution shapes our guests, our community, and the future of hospitality.

As a Stewarding Attendant, your work supports every meal, gathering, and guest experience at Populus. From maintaining spotless equipment to properly managing food waste, you help create the foundation that allows our culinary and hospitality teams to deliver their best work.

Why This Opportunity

This is an opportunity to do more than wash dishes. It is an opportunity to become an important part of a team that keeps Populus moving while contributing directly to our commitment to responsible and sustainable hospitality.

If you are someone who cares deeply about people, takes pride in doing the right thing, stays curious, and enjoys being part of something bigger than yourself, you will feel at home at Populus. Together, we will create meaningful experiences that leave our guests, and our world, a little better than we found them.
