As of Jun 25, 2026, the average yearly pay for senior attorney in the United States is $136,143.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $101,500.00 and $161,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Attorney, you need deep legal expertise, strong analytical skills, and typically a Juris Doctor (JD) degree with a valid state bar license. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, case management software, and continued legal education certifications are often required. Excellent negotiation, leadership, and communication skills help you manage complex cases and mentor junior staff. These capabilities are crucial for delivering sound legal advice, achieving favorable outcomes, and supporting organizational goals in high-stakes environments.

How does a Senior Attorney typically collaborate with junior legal staff and other departments within a firm?

Senior Attorneys often play a pivotal role in mentoring junior legal staff, providing guidance on case strategy, and reviewing work to ensure quality and compliance. They also collaborate closely with other departments such as compliance, risk management, and business development to align legal advice with the organization's broader goals. This cross-functional collaboration helps ensure that legal solutions are practical, risk-aware, and support the firm's overall objectives.

What are Senior Attorneys?

Senior Attorneys are experienced legal professionals who provide expert legal advice, represent clients in complex legal matters, and often supervise junior attorneys or legal teams. They typically specialize in one or more areas of law and are responsible for managing significant cases, drafting legal documents, and developing legal strategies. Senior Attorneys may also play a key role in mentoring less-experienced lawyers and ensuring the legal team's work meets high professional standards.

WHO WE ARE

Disability Rights California (DRC) defends, advances, and strengthens the rights and opportunities of people with disabilities.

DRC works for a world where all disabled people have power and are treated with dignity and respect. In this world, people with disabilities are supported, valued, included in their communities, afforded the same opportunities as people without disabilities, and make their own decisions.

DRC values all forms of human diversity. We are committed to a culture of belonging where all people are welcome. In order to be effective advocates for all people with disabilities, we must address discrimination in all its forms, including the unique challenges faced by people who experience the intersection of multiple systems of discrimination.

Equal Access and Housing Practice Group

The Equal Access and Housing Practice Group is a diverse, statewide team of passionate attorneys and advocates developing and implementing impactful strategies โ€“ short-term direct services, rights education, litigation, policy advocacy, and community support to end discrimination against people with disabilities and increase access. Our current priorities include:

  • challenging discrimination in public and private programs;
  • confronting the criminalization of people experiencing homelessness;
  • protecting and increasing affordable, accessible housing; and
  • addressing the intersectional needs of people with disabilities.

We are committed to progressive social change for diverse people with disabilities and strive to build a culture of cooperation and mutual support.

PURPOSE OF POSITION

The Equal Access and Housing Practice Group seeks a senior attorney who will lead, mentor, and work collaboratively on various advocacy initiatives to end discrimination against people with disabilities and increase access. Applicant should have demonstrated experience in leading impact litigation, community advocacy, individual affirmative advocacy, and a passion for sharing their experience and knowledge with colleagues. The goal of our teamโ€™s work is to provide individualized help to improve housing stability and access to private and public programs for people with disabilities while meeting federal and state grant requirements.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the job responsibilities.
