What is a security sales engineer?

A Security Sales Engineer is a technical expert who supports the sales team in selling cybersecurity products and solutions. They bridge the gap between technical requirements and business needs by demonstrating product capabilities, addressing customer concerns, and designing security solutions. Their role involves pre-sales activities such as presentations, proof-of-concept demonstrations, and technical guidance. They work closely with customers to understand their security challenges and recommend appropriate solutions. Strong communication, technical expertise, and problem-solving skills are essential for success in this role.

What does a security sales engineer do?

A typical day for a Security Sales Engineer involves working closely with account managers and prospective clients to assess security requirements, deliver product demonstrations, and create tailored solutions. You’ll review customer IT environments, develop proofs of concept, and respond to technical inquiries or RFPs. Collaboration is key, as you’ll often liaise with product and engineering teams to address complex questions and ensure that solutions meet both technical and business needs. This dynamic mix of technical problem-solving, client interaction, and team collaboration makes each day varied and engaging.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a security sales engineer?

To thrive as a Security Sales Engineer, you need a solid background in cybersecurity concepts, technical solution design, and a degree in computer science, information technology, or a closely related field. Familiarity with security technologies such as firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and certifications like CISSP, CEH, or vendor-specific credentials (e.g., Cisco, Palo Alto Networks) are highly valued. Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills set top performers apart by enabling them to convey complex technical solutions to non-technical stakeholders. These abilities are crucial for effectively bridging the gap between customer needs and technical solutions, ensuring successful sales outcomes and customer satisfaction.

How much money do security sales engineers make?

Security sales engineers typically earn a median annual salary between $80,000 and $120,000, depending on experience, location, and certifications. They often receive commissions or bonuses based on sales performance and may need technical knowledge of security products and solutions.

Job description

Description
Keeper Security is hiring an experienced Sales Engineer, DevOps to join our B2B sales team. This is a 100% remote position from select locations, with an opportunity to work a hybrid schedule for candidates based in the Chicago, IL metro area.
Keeper's cybersecurity software is trusted by millions of people and thousands of organizations globally. Keeper is published in 23 languages and is sold in over 150 countries. Join one of the fastest-growing cybersecurity companies and be responsible for navigating our customers through the technical landscape of our products while serving as a DevOps subject matter expert.
About Keeper
Keeper Security is one of the fastest-growing cybersecurity software companies that protects thousands of organizations and millions of people in over 150 countries. Keeper is a pioneer of zero-knowledge and zero-trust security built for any IT environment. Its core offering, KeeperPAM®, is an AI-enabled, cloud-native platform that protects all users, devices and infrastructure from cyber attacks. Recognized for its innovation in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Privileged Access Management (PAM), Keeper secures passwords and passkeys, infrastructure secrets, remote connections and endpoints with role-based enforcement policies, least privilege and just-in-time access. Learn why Keeper is trusted by leading organizations to defend against modern adversaries at KeeperSecurity.com.
The Problem We Solve for DevOps Teams
Modern engineering organizations face a growing crisis of secrets sprawl: hardcoded credentials in source code, unmanaged service accounts, secrets embedded in CI/CD pipelines, and machine identities that proliferate across containers and cloud environments with no governance. KeeperPAM with Keeper Secrets Manager (KSM) eliminate these risks by giving DevOps and platform engineering teams a zero-knowledge platform that integrates natively into the tools and workflows they already use like Jenkins, Kubernetes, Ansible, GitHub Actions, Terraform, and more.
As a Sales Engineer, DevOps, you will be the technical voice that helps engineering leaders and security teams understand and solve these problems with Keeper.
About the Role
As a Sales Engineer, DevOps, you will work alongside the Keeper Security sales force by supporting the pre-sales and post-sales cycle from a technical perspective. You will be responsible for identifying the technical requirements within an opportunity, matching them to Keeper Security solutions, and supporting the sale by positioning and demonstrating differences. You will provide product trials and evaluations to Keeper Security partners, assist with implementation and integration, and provide level-2 technical assistance to existing customers.
In addition, you will serve as a DevOps subject matter expert and work with customers to understand and secure their development environments, CI/CD pipelines, cloud-native infrastructure and automated workflows.
Responsibilities
  • Provide and manage pre-sales technical support for the technical sales process of Keeper products
  • Work closely with the sales team to identify customer opportunities and understand their business needs
  • Conduct product demonstrations and technical presentations remotely, at customer locations, or on-site at a Keeper facility
  • Serve as a DevOps subject matter expert for customers, prospects and internal sales teams
  • Conduct technical discovery related to software development, CI/CD pipelines, DevSecOps workflows and cloud-native environments
  • Demonstrate Keeper integrations and use cases involving Jenkins, Kubernetes, Ansible, Red Hat OpenShift, GitLab and related DevOps technologies
  • Collaborate with product development and engineering teams to stay updated on product features, enhancements and updates
  • Address technical questions, concerns and objections during the sales process to ensure customer confidence and satisfaction
  • Act as a technical advisor to customers, helping them understand how our solutions can solve their business challenges and achieve their goals
  • Stay informed about industry trends, the competitive landscape and emerging technologies relevant to the business
  • Analyze complex multivariate problems and use a systematic approach to gain quick resolution, often under pressure
  • Work on issues that affect design and selling success or address future concepts, products or technologies
  • Establish relationships and engage with technical personnel to identify opportunities and sell Keeper Security products and services
  • Ensure accurate and timely activity and issue updates in Salesforce and report to management
  • Create and deliver technical product presentations and/or training sessions to channel partners and customers
  • Participate as part of a sales team to achieve or exceed revenue targets
  • Contribute to the execution of company objectives to achieve goals in creative and effective ways
  • Ability to travel to and from customer meetings locally and nationally and rent and/or operate a vehicle on behalf of the company

Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in a pre-sales technical role such as Sales Engineer, Systems Engineer, Solutions Engineer or a similar position with a focus on Machine Identity Security and/or DevOps.
  • Hands-on experience with Jenkins, Kubernetes, Ansible, Red Hat OpenShift, GitLab and other DevOps or CI/CD technologies
  • Professional background in software development, DevOps, DevSecOps, platform engineering or a related technical field
  • Strong understanding of software development lifecycles, CI/CD pipelines, containerized environments and DevOps best practices
  • Experience with scripting, APIs and automation using languages or tools such as Python, Bash or PowerShell
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a strong entrepreneurial drive
  • Strong experience with Windows and Active Directory administration and knowledge of UNIX/Linux
  • Outstanding presentation skills and the ability to build and demonstrate a high-quality product overview to both technical and executive-level audiences
  • Technical background in networking and security applications as well as cloud technologies such as AWS and Azure
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%

Preferred Requirements
  • Industry-recognized certifications
  • Experience with additional technologies such as Docker, Terraform, Helm, GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps
  • Exposure to identity providers such as Microsoft Entra ID and Okta
  • Experience providing solutions to and understanding the requirements of enterprise customers
  • Prior experience with cybersecurity solutions or relevant experience with PAM, IAM, secrets management or other security SaaS solutions
