An SDR (Sales Development Representative) internship is a temporary, entry-level position where interns learn and assist with the process of generating and qualifying sales leads for a company. The goal of the internship is to develop essential sales skills, understand sales processes, and prepare for a potential full-time role in sales or business development.

What are some common challenges SDR interns face when learning to qualify leads, and how can they overcome them?

SDR interns often find it challenging to distinguish between high-quality leads and those less likely to convert, especially when starting out. This is usually due to limited experience with the company's ideal customer profile and the nuances of effective questioning. To overcome these challenges, interns can shadow experienced SDRs, participate in regular training sessions, and seek feedback from team members and managers. Consistent practice and leveraging CRM tools also help interns build confidence and accuracy in lead qualification.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SDR Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SDR Intern, you need strong communication skills, a basic understanding of sales principles, and preferably some coursework or experience in business or marketing. Familiarity with CRM tools like Salesforce, email automation systems, and prospecting platforms is often expected. Persistence, coachability, and a proactive attitude help you stand out in this fast-paced, target-driven environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively generating leads, building relationships, and supporting the sales pipeline.

Job description

Soda is looking for an SDR Intern to support our sales team and help scale our outbound efforts. In this role, you'll focus on reaching out to prospective customers, qualifying inbound and outbound leads, and booking meetings for our Account Executives (AEs).
You'll also help AEs with follow-ups, and assist in moving deals forward through the sales pipeline. Additionally, you'll occasionally join in-person events to support our sales and marketing efforts. You'll work closely with SDRs, Account Executives, and Lead Researchers.
About us
Soda helps customers detect, resolve, and prevent data quality issues by combining automated post-production monitoring with pre-production pipeline data testing. We enable Data Engineers to effectively "shift left" data quality initiatives from business to engineering.
Founded in 2019 by Maarten (employee #5 at Collibra) and Tom (creator of multiple OSS projects that generated hundreds of millions in value), Soda is trusted by companies like Tesla, Slack, Adyen, Walmart, and J.P. Morgan Chase. Our product offering includes:
  • Soda Core - our open-source project
  • Soda Cloud - our commercial SaaS platform

We're well-funded, with backing from top investors such as Point Nine Capital, Hummingbird, Singular, and Eurazeo. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of data quality software for years to come.
Our Values
At Soda, we value freedom with responsibility, transparency, and a growth mindset. We avoid politics and embrace open, direct communication. We raise potential issues early and communicate frequently. You'll have the autonomy to prioritize and organize your work, and we expect you to grow with the company.
As Soda continues to grow, we envision successful interns progressing into full-time SDR roles and, over time, Account Executive positions.
Why You'll Love Working at Soda
  • Join a fast-growing, VC-funded international startup with a flat structure
  • Take full ownership of your work
  • Collaborate with a diverse, rapidly expanding global team
  • Fully remote and flexible work culture, with frequent opportunities to connect in person

What You Might Not Love
  • A fast-paced environment with lots to do
  • Constant learning and adaptation are required

Responsibilities
  • Pipeline Building: Purely outbound role focused on booking meetings for AEs.
  • Prospecting: Research leads and accounts, identify their use cases, tech stack, funding, and interest, and use it for the outbound.
  • Booking meetings: we use all channels such as LinkedIn, email, and cold calling(a lot!).
  • Build from Scratch: We have basic playbooks, messaging, and sequences that work. But we want you to build what you know works or develop new strategies.
  • Collaboration: You will work with the AEs on follow-ups and alignment on important accounts. You will also work with our lead researchers that will help you with prospecting.
  • CRM Management: Log, track, and keep sales activities up to date in CRM tools such as Salesforce and Lemlist.

Requirements
  • Highly proactive and independent, with a strong ability to propose and defend new ideas.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written).
  • Quota hitter. Your motivation should not just be to hit your number but also crush it.
  • You're fast. You can learn quickly and grasp new concepts easily.
  • Comfortable working independently and in a team environment.
  • Available for a minimum of 20 hours per week.
  • Start date: January (we're looking to fill this role ASAP)
  • Based in US

Nice to Have
  • Prior internship or experience in a data-related company
  • Previous sales or customer service experience
  • Some understanding of the data/AI tooling landscape
  • Based in a major city where industry, tech, or startup events regularly take place

Benefits
  • Be part of the early stages of a well-funded European-based open-source startup with major growth potential
  • Fully remote work environment (with optional office access)
  • Fast-paced environment with a team of ambitious and talented people
  • Opportunity to transition into a full-time sales/growth role post-internship
  • Compensation: $25/hour

Hiring process
  1. Attach a Google Drive link with a short video (max 1 minute) where you briefly introduce yourself and answer: "What is the most impressive thing you've achieved?"
  2. Practical assaignment
  3. Team interview
