What is an SDR internship?

An SDR (Sales Development Representative) internship is a temporary, entry-level position where interns learn and assist with the process of generating and qualifying sales leads for a company. Interns typically gain hands-on experience with prospecting, cold calling, emailing potential clients, and using customer relationship management (CRM) tools. The goal of the internship is to develop essential sales skills, understand sales processes, and prepare for a potential full-time role in sales or business development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SDR intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SDR Intern, you need strong communication skills, a basic understanding of sales principles, and preferably some coursework or experience in business or marketing. Familiarity with CRM tools like Salesforce, email automation systems, and prospecting platforms is often expected. Persistence, coachability, and a proactive attitude help you stand out in this fast-paced, target-driven environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively generating leads, building relationships, and supporting the sales pipeline.

What are some common challenges SDR interns face when learning to qualify leads, and how can they overcome them?

SDR interns often find it challenging to distinguish between high-quality leads and those less likely to convert, especially when starting out. This is usually due to limited experience with the company's ideal customer profile and the nuances of effective questioning. To overcome these challenges, interns can shadow experienced SDRs, participate in regular training sessions, and seek feedback from team members and managers. Consistent practice and leveraging CRM tools also help interns build confidence and accuracy in lead qualification.

ABOUT ARTERA
Our Mission: Make healthcare #1 in customer service.
What We Deliver: Artera is an agentic company strengthening how healthcare providers communicate and care for patients. As an agentic partner, we bring over a decade of healthcare experience to address urgent workflows from day one and build custom solutions as healthcare providers' needs evolve. Trusted by 1,000+ specialties, FQHCs, health systems, and federal agencies, Artera strengthens and protects and enhances patient relationships across every interaction - from intake and scheduling to referral management, post-visit care, and more.
Hear from our CEO, Guillaume de Zwirek, about why we are standing at the edge of the biggest technological shift in healthcare's history!
Our award-winning culture: Since founding in 2015, Artera has consistently been recognized for its innovative technology, business growth, and named a top place to work. Examples of these accolades include: Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024); Deloitte Technology Fast 500 (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025); Built In Best Companies to Work For (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026). Artera has also been recognized by Forbes as one of "America's Best Startup Employers," Newsweek as one of the "World's Best Digital Health Companies," and named one of the top "44 Startups to Bet your Career on in 2024" by Business Insider.
Applicants must be currently authorized and have the ability to provide proof of full-time, long-term authorization to work in the United States. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship or support visa transfers now or in the future.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Artera is seeking a high-potential, hungry, and coachable Sales Development Representative (SDR) to be the future engine of our growth. This isn't just a job; it's a dedicated fast track designed to equip you with the fundamental skills needed to break into a high-earning, long-term sales career in the booming healthcare technology space.
You'll be on the front lines, acting as a strategic consultant, not just a cold caller, using advanced sales tools and techniques to connect with executives at top healthcare organizations. If you have the drive, we provide the mentorship, training, and promotion path to an Account Executive role.
This is a full-time, in-office role (Monday-Friday) based in our high-energy downtown Santa Barbara, CA headquarters. Join a team where you'll build your network, gain foundational business acumen, and enjoy the perks of living and working on the California coast.
Responsibilities
  • This role is about strategy, persistence, and honing the communication skills that separate top earners from the rest. You will...
  • Own the Outreach Engine: Design and execute strategic, multi-channel outbound campaigns (phone, email, LinkedIn, video) to initiate conversations with key decision-makers (C-Suite, VPs) at major healthcare systems.
  • Become a Qualification Expert: Rapidly research, identify, and deeply qualify new business opportunities to ensure high-quality pipeline development for our Account Executive team.
  • Conduct Pre-Call Intelligence: Move beyond generic calls by performing in-depth research on prospects and accounts to tailor your messaging and prove you've done your homework.
  • Drive Momentum & Insight: Utilize Salesforce daily to meticulously track progress, manage follow-up cadences, and provide critical market feedback to the leadership team.
  • Collaborate and Iterate: Work shoulder-to-shoulder with Account Executives and Sales Leadership to constantly test new strategies, refine messaging, and participate in role-playing sessions that will sharpen your technique.

Requirements
  • We are hiring for attitude, potential, and coachability. While a background in sales helps, a proven commitment to hustle and growth is what really matters.
  • Educational Foundation: Bachelor's degree, or 1-2 years of relevant experience in a fast-paced, customer-facing, or goal-oriented role (e.g., retail management, university fundraising, competitive sports, military service).
  • Unstoppable Drive: Highly motivated and intrinsically driven with a strong desire to compete and achieve ambitious personal and professional goals.
  • Exceptional Communicator: Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills with the confidence to professionally engage senior executives.
  • Growth Mindset: Naturally curious, eager to learn cutting-edge sales methodologies, and receptive to direct coaching and feedback.
  • Team-Centric Attitude: Excited to be part of a high-energy, collaborative in-office environment where team success is celebrated.

Bonus
  • Previous exposure to B2B technology sales or internships.
  • Familiarity with CRMtools like Salesforce or outreach automation platforms.
  • Experience in high-volume cold calling or professional phone-based outreach.
  • Interest or background in the rapidly evolving Healthcare or HealthTech industry.

$57,000 - $57,000 a year
The annual On-Target Earnings (OTE) for an entry-level SDR is $85,000. This is made up of a $57,000 base salary with a $28,000 uncapped bonus structure. Outperform and earn more! This position also will be eligible for equity in the form of stock options.
Please only apply if you are able and willing to work out of our Santa Barbara HQ 5 days per week.
We want this to be a fast, transparent, and mutually beneficial process. Here are the steps you can expect from our interview process...
1. Introductory Call with Talent Acquisition (20-30 min): A quick chat to learn about your background, understand your career aspirations, and share detailed insight into the SDR role, team structure, and our high-performance culture.
2. Writing Assignment (Self-Paced, 1 hour): A short, practical exercise designed to assess your written communication and strategic research skills-both are critical components of high-level outbound sales. We do not expect you to spend more than an hour on this.
3. On-site Interview with Mock Call (1 hour): The final stage, where you'll meet the hiring manager and members of the sales team in our Santa Barbara office. This interview will be a deeper conversation focused on your motivation, sales mindset, and demonstrating your potential for rapid growth within the SDR function. You'll be asked to execute a short mock cold call to demonstrate your communication skills and coachability under pressure.

Artera HQ is in Santa Barbara, CA and for this role, we require 5 days per week in the office.
