Job description

We are seeking a motivated, technically knowledgeable Commission-Based Sales Engineer to develop new business and expand our customer base for our CNC precision machining operation.

The ideal candidate will have experience in CNC machining, manufacturing, industrial sales, engineering, or a related field and will understand how to communicate with engineers, purchasing professionals, supply-chain personnel, and manufacturing management.

This position will focus primarily on new customer acquisition, RFQ development, relationship building, and profitable sales growth. Compensation will be performance-driven, with commission tied to sales generated from accounts developed and managed by the Sales Engineer.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Identify and develop new customers requiring CNC machining and precision-manufactured components.
  • Prospect manufacturers, OEMs, equipment builders, automation companies, and other organizations that outsource machined components.
  • Develop relationships with purchasing managers, engineers, sourcing professionals, supply-chain managers, and operations leaders.
  • Generate qualified leads through phone calls, email, networking, referrals, industry events, LinkedIn, and direct customer visits.
  • Identify opportunities for CNC turning, CNC milling, Swiss machining, and other manufacturing services offered by the company.
  • Obtain drawings, specifications, annual usage, target pricing, delivery requirements, and other information required to prepare quotations.
  • Work closely with estimating, engineering, production, and management to determine whether potential work is a good fit for the company's capabilities.
  • Follow up consistently on quotations and determine why quotes are won or lost.
  • Negotiate pricing and commercial terms within company-established guidelines.
  • Maintain relationships with customers after initial orders are received and identify additional opportunities within those accounts.
  • Conduct customer visits and facility tours as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate records of prospects, RFQs, quotations, opportunities, and customer activity.
  • Develop and maintain a sales pipeline with measurable revenue opportunities.
  • Provide regular reports on prospecting activity, quotations, new accounts, expected revenue, and sales performance.
  • Represent the company professionally and accurately communicate our machining capabilities, quality standards, capacity, and value proposition.
  • Focus on developing long-term, repeat-production customers rather than one-time low-value opportunities.

Technical Knowlege

The successful candidate should have a working understanding of manufacturing and preferably be familiar with:

  • CNC milling and turning
  • Swiss CNC machining
  • Precision machined components
  • Reading engineering drawings and prints
  • GD&T and dimensional tolerances
  • Metals, plastics, and common machining materials
  • Secondary operations such as heat treating, plating, anodizing, grinding, and finishing
  • Manufacturing lead times
  • Production quantities and annual usage
  • Tooling and setup considerations
  • Quality requirements and inspection
  • RFQs and manufacturing quotations

The Sales Engineer is not necessarily responsible for creating the final manufacturing estimate, but must understand machining well enough to qualify opportunities and communicate effectively between the customer and our estimating/engineering team.

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include

  • Experience in CNC machining, manufacturing, engineering, estimating, or industrial sales
  • Previous experience selling CNC machining or contract manufacturing services strongly preferred
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing terminology
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable prospecting and developing business from new customers
  • Strong relationship-building and negotiation skills
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently
  • Ability to manage a sales pipeline and consistently follow up on opportunities
  • Ability to travel locally and regionally for customer meetings when necessary

Compensation

This position is structured as a commission-based sales role, with compensation directly tied to the profitable business generated by the Sales Engineer.

The Company may offer:

  • Commission on qualifying sales from new accounts
  • Higher commission incentives for new customer acquisition
  • Performance bonuses for achieving annual sales targets
  • Additional incentives for developing high-volume or recurring production accounts

Specific commission percentages, payment timing, account ownership, and eligibility requirements will be defined in the Sales Commission Agreement.

Commission eligibility may be based on collected customer revenue and/or gross profit to ensure that sales growth remains profitable for the company.

Performance Expectations

Performance will be evaluated based on measurable results including:

  • New qualified prospects developed
  • New RFQs generated
  • Quote activity
  • Quote-to-order conversion
  • New customers acquired
  • New sales revenue
  • Gross profit generated
  • Recurring production business developed
  • Growth within assigned accounts
  • Customer retention

The primary objective of this position is to generate profitable, sustainable CNC machining revenue and establish long-term manufacturing relationships.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone who understands that selling CNC machining is more than simply finding companies that need parts made.

We are looking for someone who can identify the right work for our equipment and capabilities, build strong relationships with customers, understand their sourcing challenges, and create opportunities that are profitable for both the customer and our company.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced manufacturing sales professional who wants significant earning potential based on the business they develop.
