Proactively develop, facilitate and maintain compliance programs for the Illinois and Arkansas
Plants to meet and exceed all local, state, and federal requirements in the environmental health
and safety areas. Position is responsible for maintaining ISO 14001 registration status.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Promote and develop safe work practices and provide as necessary day to day direction and/or communication to supervisors and management.
- Develop a working knowledge of environmental regulations (local, state and federal), and consult with management and staff when appropriate to ensure a consistent approach.
- Work with Environmental Consultants to prepare and submit, as well as maintain all environmental permit applications for operations.
- Work with Environmental Consultant to prepare and submit all reports in the environmental area required by local, state and federal agencies meeting required timelines and deadlines.
- Oversee the operation and maintenance of equipment relating to the organization’s environmental aspects and also the monitoring of equipment associated with environmental activities (land, air, water, etc.).
- Maintain communication with environmental regulatory agencies on matters relating to operations and communicating accordingly to the Vice President of Operations and others as needed.
- Direct a program of waste disposal, which meets and/or exceeds the requirements of the state, certifying that associates involved with waste disposal hold appropriate certifications to meet regulations (local, state and federal).
- Lead and further enhance the plants’ safety programs, meetings and teams, to comply with OSHA regulations.
- Maintain cooperative relationships with local, state, and federal inspectors, as well as internal and external auditors.
- Monitor environmental regulations. Inform management of impact on plant operations and provide technical assistance on environmental matters.
- Participate in the development and implementation of the plant emergency response plan and review of the SPCC and SWPPP plans.
- Serve as a liaison with outside environmental contractors/consultants.
- Ensure completion of calibrations and preventive maintenance checks on all environmental equipment and maintain traceable standards as required.
- Monitor plant specific Environmental Management System policies and procedures for adequacy and effectiveness on a regular and routine basis to confirm total compliance.
- Perform investigations and root-cause analysis of complaints as required through EHS concerns reporting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- The EHS Coordinator plays a main role in ensuring that environmental requirements are met, plant wide and departmentally, as applicable (air, water, land, etc.). Accordingly, the EHS Coordinator participates in the review of all programs, processes, and documentation to ensure requirements are fulfilled. This includes, but is not limited to, a review of the EHS manual, all applicable permits, environmental check sheets, process procedures, training programs, and internal/external audit documentation.
- The major portion of the EHS Coordinator’s time is devoted to supporting the production group in order to promote, verify, and validate environmental practices and a safe working environment. Such support includes maintaining cooperative relationships with all levels of plant personnel, to make sure all work areas and issues are being considered and maintained. This will assist the EHS Coordinator in being alert to opportunities for continual improvement and will contribute to drawing out suggestions from others.
- The EHS Coordinator is also responsible for reviewing safety needs associated with plant operations, and for participating in the generation and implementation of safe work practices and programs, including developing Job Safety Analysis (JSA’s). This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring safety training is current, emergency response teams are identified, PPE appropriate for the scope of work being performed are available and utilized, safety meetings and facility walk-throughs are conducted, and new safety processes and procedures are implemented as needed. Such work practices, programs, and training will be based off OSHA regulations and checks and balances will be performed to ensure compliance.
As a part of our commitment to continual improvement, the EHS Coordinator will assist in
identifying issues (actual and potential), conducting root-cause analysis, instituting
corrective and preventive action, as well as, verifying effectiveness. Typical corrective
actions include changes to EHS processes and procedures, generation of Environmental
Concerns Reports, installation of safety equipment, and updates to current programs.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Ensures that Eakas Corporation and Eakas Arkansas Corporation retain ISO14001 certification status and that the Environmental Management System is maintained and communicated plant wide according to local, state and federal requirements.
- Actively participates in third party audits of Eakas Corporation’s and Eakas Arkansas Corporation’s ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and is responsible for providing prompt corrective actions and communications to ensure apt closure.
- Identifies and documents environmental health and safety issues provided by audits, environmental concerns reports, safety meetings, facility walk-throughs, etc.
- Recommends or implements the appropriate corrective action to said environmental health and safety issues in the assigned area(s), with the aid of upper management.
- Reviews all documentation related to environmental health and safety of critical equipment in designated areas, such as, maintenance check sheets, calibrations and testing records, to ensure validity of regulatory compliance.
- Writes environmental health and safety plans, procedures, programs, etc.
- Performs research when new regulations are identified and conducts audits for verification and validation to ensure comprehensive compliance.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience. The EHS Coordinator role requires knowledge in several areas, including environmental sciences, health and safety regulations, and some knowledge of chemistry to assist with decisions related to paint, plastic, chrome plating, wastewater and assembly processes. Knowledge of the company environmental management system is a must, as well as ability to research information utilizing regulatory portals.
Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical information, regulatory codes and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from personnel and outside correspondence. Ability to effectively present information to top management.
Computer Skills:
Knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing, database and internet software.
