Job description

About the job Remote | Chess Analyst (1800+ ELO) - Up to $80/hour
We are sharing a specialised remote consulting opportunity for strong chess players with a rating of 1800+ ELO and excellent command of algebraic notation, game reconstruction, and spoken chess commentary.
This role supports the creation of a high-quality chess dataset for advanced AI research. Selected experts will correct chess commentary transcripts, reconstruct complete games from transcript evidence, and assess whether the available information uniquely determines each game.
Key Responsibilities
Chess Transcript Correction

  • Review video-based commentary from strong chess players and correct speech-to-text transcription errors
  • Identify and fix errors involving piece names, board squares, moves, captures, checks, and other chess terminology
  • Preserve the meaning and sequence of the original spoken commentary
  • Apply careful listening and chess knowledge to resolve transcription ambiguities
  • Maintain high accuracy across detailed commentary transcripts
Game Reconstruction
  • Reconstruct complete chess games using only the corrected transcript
  • Build the game move by move on an analysis board such as Lichess or Chess.com
  • Produce accurate PGN records for reconstructed games
  • Infer legal move sequences from spoken descriptions, positions, tactical ideas, and contextual clues
  • Complete reconstruction without using the original video or searching for the source game
Game Validation & Ambiguity Analysis
  • Determine whether the corrected transcript uniquely specifies the complete game
  • Identify positions where multiple legal continuations remain possible
  • Specify the minimal additional information required when a game cannot be uniquely reconstructed
  • Check move legality, board consistency, and PGN accuracy throughout the reconstruction
  • Apply strong chess reasoning to resolve subtle sequencing and notation issues
Quality Review
  • Review completed work for transcription accuracy, move-sequence consistency, and technical correctness
  • Identify missing, contradictory, or ambiguous information within chess commentary
  • Apply consistent standards across large sets of reconstruction tasks
  • Provide clear written explanations when the available transcript is insufficient
  • Contribute to the development of reliable chess data for AI evaluation and training
Ideal Profile
  • Chess rating of 1800+ ELO, either FIDE or a comparable established online rating
  • Strong practical understanding of chess strategy, tactics, and legal move sequences
  • Fluent command of standard algebraic notation
  • Comfortable reconstructing games using Lichess, Chess.com, or comparable analysis boards
  • Strong ability to interpret spoken chess commentary
  • Excellent attention to detail when working with moves, squares, positions, and notation
  • Ability to reason through incomplete or ambiguous move descriptions
  • Comfortable producing and validating PGN game records
  • Chess coaching, competitive play, analysis, tournament, or similar experience is highly relevant
  • Strong written accuracy and ability to work independently on detailed tasks
Engagement Details
  • Fully remote independent contractor engagement
  • Flexible scheduling based on project requirements
  • Compensation: Up to $80/hour
  • Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded based on project needs and performance
  • Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, or other third party
  • H1-B and STEM OPT support is unavailable for this engagement
