How much do professional notary jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 11, 2026, the average yearly pay for professional notary in the United States is $64,777.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $62,000.00 and $72,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges Professional Notaries face when working with clients, and how can they be managed?

Professional Notaries often encounter challenges such as clients arriving without proper identification, incomplete or incorrect documents, or misunderstanding the notarial process. Managing these challenges requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of state regulations. Successful notaries proactively explain requirements to clients ahead of appointments, maintain up-to-date knowledge of legal guidelines, and prepare checklists to ensure every signing is completed efficiently and legally.

What is the most a notary can make?

A professional notary's income varies based on location, workload, and whether they work independently or for an organization. Typically, notaries earn between $10 and $20 per signature, with some earning additional fees for complex services, and annual income can range from a few thousand to over $50,000 for highly active notaries. Certification, experience, and the ability to offer mobile services can increase earning potential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Professional Notary, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Notary, you need a thorough understanding of notarial laws and procedures, meticulous attention to detail, and state-required notary commission or certification. Familiarity with digital notarization tools, electronic signature platforms, and recordkeeping systems is increasingly important. Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and discretion help build client trust and ensure sensitive information is handled appropriately. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure the legal validity of documents, prevent fraud, and maintain a reputable notary practice.

How much money do you make on Notarize?

As a professional notary working through platforms like Notarize, earnings typically depend on the number of notarizations performed and the platform's pay structure, which can range from $10 to $25 per notarization. Some notaries earn additional income by offering remote online notarization services, often working flexible hours and requiring certification or training. Overall, income varies based on experience, volume, and regional demand.

Can I actually make money as a notary?

Professional notaries can earn income by charging fees for notarizing documents, which vary by state or region. Successful notaries often supplement their income through mobile services, certifications, or offering additional legal document services. Earnings depend on the volume of clients, fees charged, and whether they operate independently or through an agency.

What is the difference between Professional Notary vs Notary Public?

AspectProfessional NotaryNotary Public
CredentialsTypically requires certification or training, depending on state lawsMust be commissioned by the state, often with minimal requirements
Work EnvironmentWorks in offices, mobile services, or legal settingsPerforms notarizations in various locations, including public and private settings
Employer & IndustryOften employed by legal firms, banks, or as independent contractorsAppointed by the state, serving the public in notarization duties

The main difference is that a Professional Notary often has specialized training or certification and may offer additional services, while a Notary Public is a state-appointed official primarily authorized to witness signatures and certify documents. Both roles are essential in legal and financial transactions, but Professional Notaries typically have a broader scope of practice and credentials.

What are professional notaries?

Professional notaries are individuals authorized by the state to serve as impartial witnesses during the signing of important documents. Their primary role is to verify the identity of signers, ensure all parties are signing voluntarily, and help prevent fraud. Notaries commonly handle documents like affidavits, deeds, powers of attorney, and loan documents. They are required to follow specific state laws and may need to pass an exam or background check to obtain their commission.

Which notary job makes the most money?

Among notary-related roles, mobile notary signing agents typically earn the highest income, especially when handling loan signings for real estate transactions. Experienced signing agents with specialized certifications can charge higher fees per appointment, increasing their earning potential. Income varies based on location, volume of signings, and expertise, with some earning over $100,000 annually.
