Product Consultants often encounter challenges such as aligning client expectations with product capabilities, managing multiple stakeholder interests, and staying updated on product enhancements. Successful consultants frequently hold regular check-ins, provide clear documentation, and collaborate closely with product and support teams to ensure client satisfaction and smooth implementation.

These skills are crucial for delivering valuable insights, driving product success, and maintaining client satisfaction.

What does a product consultant do?

A Product Consultant is a professional who provides expert advice and guidance on a company's products or services. They work closely with clients to understand their needs, demonstrate product features, and recommend solutions that best fit those needs. Product Consultants often assist in product implementation, training, and ongoing support, ensuring that clients derive maximum value from the products. Their role bridges the gap between sales, customer success, and product development teams, offering valuable insights for product improvements.

Product Consultants are accountable for accurate estimating and/or quoting, clear communication, and smooth handoffs, working closely with Design Center leadership, Coordinators, Outside Sales, vendors, and operations teams. While category expertise may vary, the expectations for professionalism, ownership, and execution remain consistent across all Product Consultants.

Core Responsibilities

Client Engagement & Sales

  • Engage clients with confidence and professionalism, identifying needs through active listening and thoughtful questions
  • Provide expert guidance on product options, compatibility, design considerations, and general installation implications
  • Prepare accurate quotes, estimates, and special-order documentation within expected turn times
  • Deliver a high touch, consultative experience aligned with Design Center standards

Product Expertise

  • Maintain deep working knowledge of assigned product categories, including specifications, options, limitations, and lead times
  • Interpret drawings, measurements, and technical documents with accuracy
  • Stay current on vendor offerings, product updates, and industry trends
  • Clearly explain technical information in a client friendly, approachable manner

Operational Excellence

  • Process quotes/estimates/orders with precision, ensuring accuracy in pricing, quantities, specifications, and documentation
  • Review vendor requirements and specifications prior to order submission to prevent rework or delays
  • Coordinate with purchasing, warehouse, fabrication, and installation partners as needed
  • Support inventory checks, sample management, and returns when applicable
  • Maintain showroom displays to ensure accuracy, cleanliness, and visual appeal

Cross Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with the Design Center Coordinator to ensure smooth client handoffs and follow-up
  • Maintain strong collaboration with Outside Sales to support leads, selections, and project transitions
  • Communicate clearly when information is incomplete or additional details are required
  • Provide backup support across product categories during peak periods or coverage gaps, as needed

Problem Solving & Issue Resolution

  • Troubleshoot product questions, order discrepancies, and technical issues with professionalism and urgency
  • Coordinate with vendors and internal teams to resolve issues efficiently
  • Communicate transparently with clients regarding timelines, changes, and order status

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience in a customer facing sales or consulting role within building materials, home products, or a related industry
  • Strong technical aptitude and ability to interpret product specifications and documentation
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced, consultative showroom environment
  • Willingness to deepen expertise in assigned categories and support others as needed

Success Traits

  • Confident, knowledgeable, and approachable
  • Detail oriented with strong follow-through
  • Collaborative and team first mindset
  • Client focused with a high bar for experience and execution
  • Accountable and comfortable owning outcomes
