Overview

A growing structural steel fabrication organization is seeking an experienced Procurement / Purchasing Manager to oversee sourcing, purchasing, and inventory management of materials required for fabrication and erection projects.

This role plays a key part in supporting production schedules, maintaining cost control, and ensuring full material traceability in compliance with industry quality standards. The position works closely with project management, shop operations, and quality teams to ensure materials are procured accurately, efficiently, and in alignment with project requirements.

The Role

The Procurement / Purchasing Manager will be responsible for managing the full procurement lifecycle, from sourcing structural steel materials and negotiating with suppliers to maintaining inventory accuracy and supporting fabrication schedules. Success in this role means ensuring materials are delivered on time, meet required specifications, and are fully documented for compliance and traceability.

This role also contributes to cost management by identifying purchasing efficiencies, managing supplier relationships, and monitoring market trends that impact material pricing.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute purchasing activities for structural steel materials and related components in alignment with project schedules.
  • Source materials that meet required grades, sizes, and specifications outlined in project documentation.
  • Ensure all materials are received with proper documentation including Mill Test Reports (MTRs) and required certifications.
  • Conduct material takeoffs and procurement planning to optimize material utilization and minimize waste.
  • Solicit and evaluate pricing from multiple vendors to secure competitive pricing and reliable delivery timelines.
  • Develop and maintain strong supplier relationships with vendors capable of meeting quality and compliance standards.
  • Issue and manage purchase orders with clear requirements for specifications, documentation, and traceability.
  • Collaborate with shop, project management, and quality teams to align procurement activities with production schedules.
  • Maintain inventory accuracy and oversee receiving processes to ensure materials meet required specifications.
  • Track and maintain material traceability through production processes in compliance with industry certification requirements.
  • Monitor supplier performance related to quality, delivery, and documentation standards.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities through sourcing strategies, vendor negotiations, and purchasing analysis.
  • Maintain purchasing records, vendor databases, pricing history, and procurement documentation.
  • Support estimating and project planning teams by providing accurate material cost data and purchasing insights.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, or related field preferred, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 3–5 years of experience in the steel industry or procurement-related roles preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of structural steel materials, fabrication processes, and construction practices.
  • Understanding of material traceability, quality documentation, and compliance requirements within steel fabrication environments.
  • Experience managing inventory control, material tracking, and cost management processes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with Tekla EPM or similar ERP systems strongly preferred.
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and vendor management skills.
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced production environment.
