What is a private catering?

A private catering job involves preparing and serving food for exclusive events such as weddings, parties, corporate gatherings, or intimate dinners. Caterers work closely with clients to customize menus, accommodate dietary preferences, and ensure a seamless dining experience. Responsibilities can include cooking, serving, setting up dining areas, and cleaning up afterward. Private catering professionals may work independently or as part of a catering company, offering a tailored and high-quality food service.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in private catering, and why are they important?

To thrive in Private Catering, you should possess strong culinary skills, organizational abilities, and experience in menu planning or event coordination, often supported by relevant culinary certificates or hospitality training. Familiarity with food safety regulations, kitchen equipment, and inventory management systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, time management, and problem-solving abilities are valuable soft skills, as is the capacity to remain calm under pressure. These competencies ensure high-quality service, client satisfaction, and successful execution of tailored catering events.

What does a typical workday look like for someone in private catering?

A typical workday in Private Catering involves preparing customized menus, sourcing fresh ingredients, coordinating with clients to finalize event details, and ensuring timely setup and service at various venues. You may also manage a team, oversee food safety practices, and handle last-minute changes or special requests. Collaboration with event planners, servers, and sometimes vendors is common to ensure seamless event execution. Flexibility is essential, as hours can vary based on event schedules, client availability, and seasonal demand. This role offers a dynamic, hands-on work environment that combines culinary expertise with client interaction.

Job description

Who We Are:
Social Express Catering & Meal Prep is a fast-growing, high-impact catering company serving the Metro Atlanta area. We specialize in youth meals, private dining, and corporate events, and we’re driven by excellence, creativity, and community care. As a small business, we value versatility, initiative, and people who go above and beyond the title.

Position Summary:
We’re hiring Catering Specialists — not just cooks. This role goes beyond the kitchen. You’ll be preparing meals, assisting with deliveries, supporting operations, and stepping in wherever needed to keep our fast-paced business running smoothly. We need dependable, high-functioning individuals who can think critically, work independently, and take pride in delivering a top-tier product and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Kitchen & Meal Preparation
    • Prepare and cook meals according to daily production sheets, recipes, and CACFP nutrition guidelines
    • Portion, package, and label meals accurately and neatly
    • Support daily prep including chopping, portioning, assembling, and storing food properly
    • Maintain a clean, sanitary, and organized work environment at all times
    • Follow opening, mid-shift, and closing kitchen checklists
    • Ensure all food safety and hygiene protocols are upheld, including temperature logs and storage practices
  • Delivery & Operational Support
    • Assist with packing meals for delivery routes and loading into delivery vehicles
    • Step in as a backup driver for local deliveries when needed
    • Navigate delivery routes efficiently, ensuring on-time drop-off and excellent customer service
    • Help with catering/event setup, equipment transportation, and cleanup
    • Monitor inventory and report shortages, damages, or low stock
  • Team Collaboration & Initiative
    • Work closely with kitchen staff, drivers, and leadership to meet daily deadlines
    • Provide feedback to improve processes, kitchen flow, and service execution
    • Adapt quickly to unexpected challenges or changes in workflow
    • Be ready to “fill in the gap” wherever needed — whether that’s mopping, running a tray, or solving a client issue
  • Qualifications:
    • 1+ years experience in food service, catering, or meal prep preferred
    • Valid driver’s license with clean record (preferred, not required)
    • High-functioning, dependable, and capable of juggling multiple tasks with minimal supervision
    • Strong attention to detail and sense of urgency
    • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
    • Able to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods, and work in a fast-paced environment
    • Bonus: ServSafe certification or leadership experience in small teams
  • Compensation & Schedule:
    • Pay: $18/hour based on experience and skills
    • Schedule: Part-time and full-time roles available
    • Perks: Growth potential, collaborative team culture, and meaningful work serving the community
