What is a Part Time Mediator job?

A Part Time Mediator facilitates discussions between parties in conflict to help them reach a voluntary resolution. This role typically involves working on a case-by-case basis, often in legal, workplace, or community settings. Part-time mediators must remain neutral, guide productive conversations, and ensure agreements are fair and mutually acceptable. The job requires strong communication, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of mediation principles. Hours and workload vary depending on the organization or freelance opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Part Time Mediator position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Mediator, you need expertise in conflict resolution, strong listening and negotiation skills, and typically a background in law, social work, or psychology. Certification from a recognized mediation training program and familiarity with case management systems are often required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and impartiality help mediators build trust and efficiently guide discussions. These qualities are crucial for fostering constructive dialogue and achieving mutually agreeable outcomes between disputing parties.

What kinds of disputes does a Part Time Mediator typically handle, and what does a typical work schedule look like?

Part Time Mediators commonly handle a variety of disputes, such as workplace disagreements, family conflicts, landlord-tenant issues, or small business matters, depending on their area of specialization. Their schedules are usually flexible, with mediation sessions arranged as needed, often during evenings or weekends to accommodate participants. This flexibility allows mediators to balance other professional or personal commitments, while still providing impartial guidance and maintaining confidentiality throughout the resolution process. Mediation work often involves collaborating with legal professionals, HR teams, or community organizations to ensure effective and fair outcomes.

Is there a demand for mediators?

The demand for mediators, including part-time mediators, is generally steady as conflict resolution remains important in legal, workplace, and community settings. Employment opportunities can vary by region and sector, with skills in communication, negotiation, and certification often enhancing job prospects.

Job description

ABOUT US

Founded in 1945, the Lane Council of Governments (LCOG) is one of the oldest councils of governments, enhancing public services in Lane County and beyond. Governed by a Board of Directors, LCOG partners with local governments and special districts in GIS Planning, Personnel Management, Transportation, and Senior and Disability Services. Located in Eugene, LCOG benefits from the city's vibrant university, nightlife, and recreational opportunities.

The Local Government Personnel Institute (LGPI), established in 1971 by the League of Oregon Cities (LOC) and the Association of Oregon Counties (AOC), provided Human Resources and Labor Relations assistance across Oregon. LGPI's services have since transitioned to LCOG, now operating as Local Government Personnel Services (LGPS).

Under LCOG's umbrella, LGPS continues LGPI's mission, offering essential HR and Labor Relations support to local governments statewide and ensuring these services remain accessible, effective, and responsive to the needs of Oregon's public agencies.

About the LGPS Legal Services Consultant Pool

LCOG is seeking qualified Employment and Labor Relations Attorneys interested in joining our LGPS Attorney Consultant Pool. This pool supports public-sector clients across Oregon on an as-needed, project-based basis, with potential for future permanent placement depending on organizational needs.

Consultants in this pool will partner with local governments on matters involving:

  • Collective bargaining and mediation strategy; negotiation support
  • Escalated labor relations matters including mediation and arbitration support
  • Contract drafting and review
  • Employment law and workplace investigations (note: investigators require DPSST certification)
  • Policy development and compliance
  • Disciplinary procedures, engagement, and grievance advisement
  • Training for managers and supervisors

Assignments may be conducted in-person, remote, or hybrid, depending on project scope and client preference.

Why Join the LGPS Legal Services Consultant Pool?

This opportunity is ideal for attorneys interested in flexible, public-sector consulting with meaningful impact. Participants gain exposure to diverse local government environments, expand professional networks, and may be considered for future permanent opportunities within LGPS as workload and funding expand.
