What does an operational program manager do?

An Operational Program Manager oversees the planning, execution, and optimization of programs within an organization to ensure they align with business goals. They coordinate between different departments, manage resources and budgets, and monitor program performance to ensure timely delivery and quality outcomes. Their responsibilities also include identifying risks, implementing process improvements, and reporting to stakeholders on program status and results. Effective Operational Program Managers possess strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

How does an operational program manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve project goals?

Operational Program Managers regularly work with various departments such as finance, product, engineering, and HR to ensure program objectives are met efficiently. They facilitate communication between teams, align resources, and resolve any interdepartmental challenges that might arise. Effective collaboration often involves leading regular status meetings, setting clear expectations, and proactively addressing risks or roadblocks to keep projects on track. This cross-functional aspect is key to driving successful outcomes and requires strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Stripe

Remote

Full-time

Job description

Who we are
About Stripe
Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies-from the world's largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups-use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone's reach while doing the most important work of your career.
About the team
The Tax Operations and Delivery team protects user trust by enabling accurate, reliable, and scalable tax operations supporting the TaxJar and Stripe Tax products. We partner closely with Product, Engineering, and cross-functional teams to solve operational challenges, support new capabilities, and continuously improve how tax operations are delivered.
As our products, partnerships, and operational footprint continue to grow, how we execute becomes just as important as what we execute. The Operations Program Management role exists to strengthen how Tax Operations and Delivery plans, coordinates, and delivers strategic work by building repeatable operating mechanisms that improve alignment, clarity, and execution across the team and its partners. If you're energized by improving how teams work, bringing structure to ambiguity, and building scalable ways for teams to execute together, you'll have the opportunity to shape the future of Tax Operations.
What you'll do
We're looking for an Operations Program Manager to help improve how Tax Operations and Delivery executes. You'll partner across Tax Operations, Product, Engineering, and other cross-functional stakeholders to design and operationalize repeatable execution mechanisms that improve planning, coordination, and delivery for key initiatives.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys bringing structure to ambiguity, simplifying complex organizational challenges, and building practical solutions that improve how teams work together. Your impact will be measured by the repeatable mechanisms you build that make operational excellence easier to achieve across the team.
Responsibilities
  • Design, maintain, and improve repeatable, lightweight execution mechanisms that track program status, communicate progress, surface execution risks on a regular cadence, and escalate blockers to the appropriate stakeholders.
  • Partner closely with your immediate Ops team and one or two cross-functional leads across Tax Operations, Product, and Engineering to improve cross-functional planning, alignment, and execution of strategic initiatives
  • Identify execution friction, process gaps, and process breakdowns, and recommend scalable improvements that strengthen operational effectiveness
  • Establish meaningful metrics and reporting that provide visibility into execution health and support data-informed decision making
  • Facilitate cross-functional reviews, planning sessions, and execution forums that help teams align, resolve blockers, and deliver measurable outcomes
  • Monitor initiatives through rollout, evaluate outcomes, and drive follow-up improvements or remediation where needed
Who you are
We're looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.
Minimum requirements
  • 3+ years of demonstrated experience leading complex cross-functional initiatives from ambiguity to execution
  • Demonstrated ability to identify friction and design scalable improvements that drive measurable outcomes
  • Strong structured problem-solving and diagnostic thinking skills, with the ability to investigate issues, identify root causes, and design scalable solutions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and drive alignment without direct authority
  • Experience designing or improving operational processes, governance, or execution mechanisms that increased organizational effectiveness
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience partnering closely with Product, Engineering, and Operations teams
  • Experience establishing operating rhythms, planning processes, or organizational governance
  • Experience in a high-growth SaaS, fintech, or operationally complex environment
  • Familiarity with operational readiness, launch management, or change management practices
  • Experience using operational metrics to measure execution health and drive continuous improvement
  • Experience with AI, automation, or workflow tools to improve organizational effectiveness
  • Lean Six Sigma, continuous improvement, or systems thinking experience
