What does an Ombuds do?

An Ombuds is a neutral, independent, and confidential resource who helps individuals navigate conflicts, concerns, or disputes within an organization. They provide informal guidance, listen to issues, and explore potential resolutions without taking sides. Ombuds do not make decisions or enforce policies but instead offer a safe space for discussion, helping individuals understand their options.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Ombuds position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Ombuds, you need strong conflict resolution, mediation, and problem-solving abilities, along with a relevant background in counseling, law, human resources, or a similar field. Familiarity with case management software, confidentiality protocols, and professional certifications such as Ombudsman training certificates can be valuable. Excellent listening skills, neutrality, discretion, and clear communication set outstanding Ombuds professionals apart. These capabilities are crucial for successfully guiding individuals through concerns, fostering organizational trust, and facilitating fair resolutions.

What does a typical day look like for an Ombuds, and who do they interact with most frequently?

A typical day for an Ombuds involves confidentially meeting with employees or stakeholders to discuss concerns, mediating disputes, and documenting cases while ensuring privacy. Ombuds professionals often collaborate with HR, management, and legal teams, but act independently to maintain impartiality. They also provide training on conflict management and may recommend organizational improvements based on recurring issues. The role requires balancing individual advocacy with supporting broader organizational fairness.

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of elderly residents in assisted living and long-term care facilities? Are you a skilled advocate who can champion the rights and well-being of our valued elders? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you! Join our team as an Ombudsman Assistant.
As a Long-Term Care Ombudsman, you'll serve as a resident advocate, working directly with individuals in long-term care facilities to improve their quality of life and the care they receive. You'll play an important role in protecting residents' rights, making sure their voices are heard, and helping ensure they are treated with dignity and respect. This position does not report to our Idaho Falls main office. The service area includes Bannock, Bear Lake, Bingham, Caribou, Franklin, Oneida, and Power counties, where you will be providing services locally.
What You'll Be Doing:
  • Investigating Complaints: Receive and objectively investigate complaints concerning residents in long-term care facilities, taking proactive steps to resolve issues and improve their living conditions.
  • Facility Visits: You'll routinely visit all long-term care facilities within our service area, establishing meaningful connections with residents and staff to advocate for enhanced care.
  • Community Education: Actively contribute to community education efforts, providing valuable insights into resident rights, current regulations, and long-term care issues. You'll also conduct staff training to promote improved quality of care.
  • Volunteer Program: You will have the opportunity to work with the local ombudsman in overseeing and implementing the Volunteer Ombudsman program, engaging passionate volunteers who share our vision.
  • Policy Advocacy: Under the guidance of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman, you will identify areas for improvement in public policy, regulations, and laws to enhance the lives of long-term care residents.

Qualifications We Seek:
  • Education and Experience: A bachelor's degree or equivalent, along with at least one year's employment experience in social work, nursing, public health, geriatrics, administration, or a related field working with the elderly.
  • Passion for Advocacy: Demonstrated experience in long-term services and support, public policy advocacy, and a strong commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of older persons and individuals with disabilities.
  • Leadership and Problem-Solving Skills: We need someone who can take the initiative, lead community education efforts, and skillfully negotiate to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Knowledge: An understanding of long-term care issues and resources will be essential for this role.
  • Complete Idaho's Ombudsman Certification Course prior to participating in Ombudsman activities

Why Work with Us:
Join a team of dedicated individuals who are committed to making a difference in the lives of our elderly residents. You'll be part of a supportive environment that values your expertise and offers opportunities for professional growth.
Compensation:
This is a full-time, hourly position with a strong benefits package and long-term stability.
  • Starting wage: $20.85 per hour
  • 403(b) Retirement Plan with 6% employer match
  • Health Insurance (multiple plan options; EICAP pays the majority of your premium and 60% of dependent premiums)
  • Employer-funded Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA)
