JOB SUMMARY  

The Osceola Library System has an opening for a Library Associate in St. Cloud, Florida. The Library Associate is the Library's front-line position and is responsible for the overall customer service focus of the Library. LAs assist patrons at service points, in the stacks, and during programs, classes and outreaches, in addition to maintaining a neat collection, helping with technology questions, and supporting a love of reading and learning. The LA is a team player who works well with others, is a patient and outgoing person that likes helping people in a diverse community, an enthusiastic self-starter needing little supervision, and is great with technology.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.  

  • Provides excellent customer service.
  • Assists patrons with all Library transactions -- including cash handling, checking in/out items, processing the transfer of materials from branch to branch, issuing library cards, collecting fees, promoting reading and learning.
  • Provides instruction in the use of the Library and its services and resources; connects patrons to services and resources through personal assistance.
  • Supports Library programs and events via promotional, marketing and outreach efforts in and out of the Library.
  • Shelves materials and maintains a tidy and orderly collection.
  • Addresses or escalates patron conduct or safety issues to appropriate management.
  • Knows and understands the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library. In addition to these freedoms, supports client discretion of materials available at your local library(ies).
  • Follows all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS

An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education,

training and/or work experience required.

  •  H.S. Diploma or GED
  • Two years of library experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of library systems and databases preferred
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Comfort with technology, including computers, cell phones and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Bilingual Spanish/English a plus
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include a combination of daytime, evening, and weekend hours.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to frequently move from place to place within the location; file and retrieve books and other items on high shelves. 
  • Lift/push up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. of heavy boxes, books, and equipment; work in confined spaces; walk; bend; stoop; reach; and climb.
