Job Summary
Under general supervision, performs routine clerical library work to include circulation desk duties, shelving, and providing general assistance to patrons of the College Station Larry J. Ringer Public Library, a branch of the Bryan + College Station Public Library System.
Essential Job Functions
  • While working the circulation desk, acts as the first point of contact for patrons entering the library, greeting and/or providing direction, registering new patrons, updating accounts, issuing new or replacement library cards, checking library materials in/out, placing material holds, and collecting library fines for overdue, lost, or damaged materials.
  • Answers general inquiries regarding library services, programs, and policies both in the library and on the telephone. Routes to a proper staff member if further assistance is needed.
  • Assists with moving donated materials to storage, emptying book drops, sorting library materials, and organizing materials onto carts to be shelved.
  • Shelves books and other library materials; actively shelf-reads to ensure materials are kept in neat and proper order.
  • Assists patrons with material searches and the use of library technology and equipment.
  • Enforces library policies and procedures in a respectful manner to ensure the safety and integrity of materials, patrons, and staff.
  • Assists with the preparation of library programs as needed or assigned.
  • Searches for library materials that are missing/claim returned.
  • Assists with performing the tasks necessary for opening/closing the library, as needed.
  • Cleans and/or performs minor repairs on damaged library materials; routes to the professional staff or Technical Services as needed.
  • Participates in training new or less experienced staff and volunteers on library policies and procedures.
  • Assists with maintaining a clean and orderly appearance of the library and materials.
  • May be required to operate a library vehicle, returning and delivering materials between library branches. Assists with basic vehicle upkeep such as cleaning and refueling. Reports any additional maintenance needs to supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Responds regularly and promptly to work.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED. Additional vocational training or college coursework is a plus.
  • At least one (1) year of work experience in a library, customer service, or office environment.

Equivalent combinations of education, experience, and training may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Cash handling and balancing procedures.
  • Customer service procedures and techniques.
  • Dewey Decimal System.

Ability to:
  • Learn basic library functions and services.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment and machinery.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Accurately input and obtain data from an online computer system.
  • Accurately calculate payments due and provide receipts/change.
  • Maintain good attendance and punctuality.
  • Sort and file alphabetically and numerically.
  • Stand for extended periods and climb stairs, ladders, and/or step stools.
  • Comply with all City and department policies and procedures.
  • Provide management with sound, positive advice, and information concerning the incumbent's area of responsibility.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and communicate effectively with the public and other required entities.

Skill in:
  • Providing efficient customer service and communicating clearly and objectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Use patience, tact, and courtesy in dealing with the public; work harmoniously with department personnel and provide excellent customer service.

Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements
  • Texas Class C driver's license with a good driving record as measured by the City's evaluation system.

Physical Demands
Physical demands include but are not limited to: sitting, talking, seeing, and hearing; continuous walking between work areas and prolonged standing; driving work vehicle between library branches; finger, hand, and arm dexterity is needed to retrieve, process, and store library materials, and to operate standard office equipment and machinery. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, stretch, climb (ladders/stools), and reach at, above, and below shoulder height to shelve or obtain library materials; lift and carry library materials and equipment that typically weigh up to 35 pounds; and push and pull heavy book carts up to 100 pounds.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in a standard office/library setting. Duties are often performed at a customer service counter, desk, or computer terminal; subject to noise from library operations and office equipment; frequent interruptions and contact in person and on the telephone with the general public, City staff, and others.
Equipment
Work shall be performed with tools, appliances, and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control, authority, or approval of the design working ranges or limitations of those items; the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.
Equipment may include but is not limited to: phone, computer, cash register, printer, copier, scanner, fax, calculator, dolly/book cart, automated circulation equipment, and work vehicle.
