Job Title: Library Technical Services Student Assistant
Effective Date: 07/09/2026
Reports to: Cataloging Supervisor & Acquisitions Manager
Department: Library
Rate of Pay: Maryland Minimum Wage
FSLA Status: Non-Exempt
Location of Position: Hoover Library, McDaniel College, 2 College Hill, Westminster, MD 21157
Duration of Appointment: August 05, 2026 to May 25, 2026
Schedule: Schedule is at discretion of supervisor
Evaluation Procedures: Student workers are evaluated on a continuous basis.
Scope: The Library Technical Services Student Assistant is responsible for supporting the Technical Services Department's daily activities.
Responsibilities:
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Checking in periodicals on an automated system and shelving.
  • Appling/inserting library identification on materials received by the library.
  • Checking in newspapers.
  • Shelf reading periodicals and popular collections.
  • shifting periodicals, government documents, microfilm and microfiche collections.
  • Searching the book stacks for duplicate copies.
  • Searching a variety of databases for bibliographic information.
  • Unpacking/sorting new library materials.
  • Unpacking/processing bindery shipments.
  • Labeling and pasting materials.
  • Matching workslips, OCLC printouts and library materials.
  • Covering juvenile books.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisors.
Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
The following minimum requirements are established for the position of Technical Services Student Assistant:
  • Current undergraduate student at McDaniel College.
  • Free time to work a minimum of 5 hours per week (Mon. - Fri., 8 am - 4 pm).
  • Interest in library work and willingness to perform various types of work.
  • Ability to work with accuracy and attention to details.
  • Dependable work habits.
  • Ability to quickly arrange workload in order to deal with competing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with computers and computer applications.
  • Experience with online library catalogs.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
  • This position requires sitting or standing for long periods of time, as well as lifting, bending and stooping.
  • This position does have some lifting involved when processing materials and shifting.
  • Finger/hand dexterity and steadiness is involved when label and pasting. The ability to use a keyboard and mouse is required. The overall setting of the job is in an area conducive to a normal office environment with minimal exposure to adverse conditions.
INFORMATION SECURITY ROLE: DATA USER
  • Follow the policies and procedures established by the appropriate Data Stewards.
  • Comply with federal and state laws and regulations as well as College policies, procedures, and standards associated with the College computing resources and institutional data used.
  • Use institutional data only as required for the conduct of College business within the scope of employment.
  • Implement safeguards prescribed by appropriate Data Stewards for Limited Access and Restricted Data.
  • Ensure the appropriateness, accuracy, and timeliness of institutional data used for the conduct of College business.
  • Report any unauthorized access, data misuse, or data quality issues to the appropriate Data Steward for remediation.
  • Accept and complete the confidentiality statement yearly if access includes Restricted data.
  • Report any suspected data breach to the CIO and the IT Help Desk as soon as possible.
