Job description


Job Title: Circulation Assistant
Effective Date: 06/2026
Reports to: Circulation & Reserves Manager
Department: Library
Rate of Pay: Maryland Minimum Wage
FSLA Status: Non-Exempt
Location of Position: Hoover Library, McDaniel College, 2 College Hill, Westminster, MD 21157
Duration of Appointment: August 05, 2026 to May 25, 2026
Schedule: Schedule is at discretion of supervisor
Evaluation Procedures: Student workers are evaluated on a continuous basis.
Scope: The Student Circulation Assistant is responsible for providing information assistance and circulation services to library patrons. In addition, students will assist with general library collection maintenance and other duties that may be assigned by the supervisor.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide exceptional customer service to the public at the library service desk by greeting patrons, answering directional and policy questions, and directing patrons to relevant staff/offices.
  • Assist in locating items throughout library using the catalog, referring patrons to librarians as needed.
  • Check materials in and out using the automated library system.
  • Register library patrons into the library system and issue library borrower cards.
  • Assist in orderly and neat maintenance of library collection, including sorting and shelving materials, shelf reading, shifting, straightening, and conducting inventory as needed to ensure accurate organization.
  • Assist with opening and/or closing the building.
  • Adhere to all library policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties and other special projects as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Current student at McDaniel College.
  • Must have excellent customer service and communication skills, be able to work well as part of a team, and follow verbal and written directions.
  • Must have a high attention to detail.
  • Must be punctual, dependable, and able to work without direct supervision.
  • Must be able to work with a diverse group of library patrons.
  • Must be flexible in scheduling, including availability to work evening and weekend hours when required.
  • Previous customer service experience, library experience, or understanding of the Dewey Decimal System/reading decimals is a plus
Physical Characteristics
  • This position may require sitting for long periods of time as well as some walking, standing, bending and stooping when shelving books, reaching over the head, as well as pushing and pulling book carts weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • This position does have some limited lifting involved, but not more than 10 pounds at a time.
  • The overall setting of the job is in an area conducive to a normal office environment with minimal exposure to adverse conditions.

  • Comply with federal and state laws and regulations as well as College policies, procedures, and standards associated with the College computing resources and institutional data used.
  • Use institutional data only as required for the conduct of College business within the scope of employment.
  • Implement safeguards prescribed by appropriate Data Stewards for Limited Access and Restricted Data.
  • Ensure the appropriateness, accuracy, and timeliness of institutional data used for the conduct of College business.
  • Report any unauthorized access, data misuse, or data quality issues to the appropriate Data Steward for remediation.
  • Accept and complete the confidentiality statement yearly if access includes Restricted data.
  • Report any suspected data breach to the CIO and the IT Help Desk as soon as possible.
