JOB SPECIFICS
Washington County Library is seeking experienced library service professionals to serve as temporary, on-call Library Services Assistants. The people who fill these positions will serve as substitutes providing exceptional customer service and contributing to making our library a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. Responsibilities include greeting customers (in person, virtually, and by phone), welcoming new customers when they register for a library card, assisting library users with circulation services, and utilizing digital literacy skills to help customers with their computer, gadget, or printing needs. The successful candidates may also assist with programs, serve as the person-in-charge, and assist volunteers when needed.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:
  • One (1) year experience as a library services assistant
  • Experience working with cultural groups other than your own
  • One (1) year experience assisting and troubleshooting technology with the public

SELECTION TECHNIQUE: Your training and experience will be rated based on the required application material submitted and the top-scoring candidates will be forwarded to the hiring department for further consideration.
HOURS / DAYS: Shifts are offered on an on-call basis and include day, evening, and weekend hours at various locations.
ANTICIPATED HIRING RATE: $24.10 Hourly

JOB SUMMARY
The Library Services Assistant II provides customer service, contributes to the efficient day-to-day operations of the library, and performs a variety of financial transactions. The Library Services Assistant II is distinguished from the Library Services Assistant I by programming, training, and volunteer coordination duties, and high-level responsibilities at the branch level.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Provide customer service.
  2. Explain basic policies, procedures, and services such as mobile apps, requesting items, privacy of customer information, activities in the building, etc.
  3. Respond to all requests for library services in person or by telephone.
  4. Register new customers and resolve problems with current customer accounts.
  5. Provide self-checkout, computer, printer, and copier services information and instruction.
  6. Troubleshoot technical issues.
  7. Check out library materials.
  8. Follow procedures to ensure a safe and secure environment for both customers and staff.
  9. Contact customers by telephone and email regarding missing materials, hold requests, inquiries and other customer needs and concerns.
  10. Assess and determine customer needs and appropriate resources.
  11. Contribute to efficient day-to-day library operations.
  12. Prepare the library building and equipment for opening and closing; check all systems and building areas to ensure safety, security and functioning of equipment.
  13. Complete library card registration processes for new accounts.
  14. Pack and unpack delivery bins.
  15. Process and distribute daily deliveries, new materials received, interlibrary loan materials, and mail.
  16. Assist with a variety of tasks to maintain the condition of materials in the collections.
  17. Remove and return books that do not belong to Washington County Library.
  18. Shelve library materials and ensure shelving order.
  19. Maintain displays and replenish giveaway materials.
  20. Order and receive supplies.
  21. Locate requested materials and file as appropriate.
  22. Monitor and use automated materials handling systems.
  23. Maintain self-check-out machines.
  24. Produce a variety of statistical reports.
  25. Assist librarians with program planning.
  26. Present programs developed with librarians to patrons of all ages.
  27. Introduce speakers and performers at programs and events.
  28. Assist with training material development and staff training.
  29. Coordinate and train volunteers.
  30. Serve as person in charge.
  31. Perform financial transactions.
  32. Assess condition of returned materials and determine if damage fees apply.
  33. Place charges for lost materials fees and collect on customers' accounts.
  34. Resolve problems with customers' fees and other charges.
  35. Collect printing and photocopying fees.
  36. Reconcile daily financial transactions and weekly revenue reports.
Performs other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work performed is physical in nature and typically performed within a library. Lifting requirement of up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis. Equipment used may include, but is not limited to, computer, calculator, telephone, camera, cash register, photocopier, printer and scanner.
Work interruptions are frequent. There is some pressure associated with dealing with individuals who may be emotionally charged and with project or activity deadlines and details.
