Job description

Library Associate

Under the supervision of the Douglass Branch Manager, the Library Associate assists customers of all ages at the Douglass Branch Library with information and reference questions; helps plan, prepare, and execute programming for all ages; assists and instructs customers with their use of library computers, personal electronic devices, and other technologies; prepares displays and demonstrates library resources; and assists with collection support. Demonstrates enthusiasm and curiosity about the changing world of public libraries; is customer focused and forward thinking; knowledgeable of popular books, movies and current technology and is eager to assist library customers.

Schedule includes daytime, evening, and weekend hours.

Open until filled, with first review of applicants on August 10, 2026.

Examples Of Duties
  • Assists with circulation procedures, including checking in and out materials, issuing library cards, processing holds, and generating reports
  • Assist and advise customers with their use of library materials, including books, movies, music, media, and electronic resources
  • Provide support in the planning, preparation, and execution of relevant and engaging programs for all ages
  • Assist customers in their use of library and personal technology and equipment; perform basic troubleshooting with hardware, software, and makerspace equipment
  • Answer informational and basic reference questions for customers of all ages
  • Help to maintain the collection, internal staff, and public webpages
  • Merchandise books and other library materials to enhance their appeal and promote their use
  • Compile statistics and prepare activity reports
  • Participate on the social media team
  • Monitor and address customer behavior to ensure a safe and welcoming environment
  • May represent Douglass Branch Library at community and neighborhood meetings and programs
  • Assist with training of library volunteers and staff
  • Participates in departmental and library-wide training and activities, including technology and safety training
  • Provides excellent internal and external customer service
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Exceptional customer service skills and commitment to public service
  • Ability to work with library customers and staff in a consistently friendly and efficient manner
  • Knowledge of and interest in books (print and electronic), music, and movies
  • Excellent computer and technology skills, including use of the Internet, computers, mobile devices, and social media
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with workplace productivity software, including skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Some experience with a library catalog or automation system
  • Some knowledge of library procedures, methods, techniques
  • Ability to coordinate the work of others, including volunteers
  • Ability to perform routine clerical and record-keeping tasks
  • Ability to maintain reliable attendance and regular schedule
  • Ability to maintain a varied schedule, including day, evening, and weekend rotations
  • Ability to issue guidance and ensure compliance with the Library's Rules of Conduct and policies
  • Good vision and hearing to effectively engage with customers
  • Physical ability to lift library materials weighing up to 40 pounds, assist in setup of events, and to push fully loaded carts of library materials
  • Satisfactory pre-employment background check
Acceptable Experience And Training
  • Bachelor degree required
  • One year of supervisory or team leader experience preferred
  • Public library experience preferred
  • Customer service experience preferred
  • Knowledge of Spanish and/or French is helpful
  • Any combination of experience and education that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities
