Job description

Flagship Pioneering is a scientific innovation engine that invents and builds companies that change the world. We bring together the greatest scientific minds with entrepreneurial company builders and assemble the capital to allow them to take courageous leaps in human health, sustainability, and beyond.

What sets Flagship apart is our ability to advance biotechnology by uniting life science innovation, company creation, and capital investment under one roof in a way that is largely without precedent. Our team of scientists, entrepreneurial leaders, and professional capital managers are each aligned around an institutionalized process that enables us to innovate and create breakthroughs for the benefit of people and planet.

Many of the companies Flagship has founded have addressed humanity's most urgent challenges: vaccinating billions of people against COVID-19, curing intractable diseases, improving human health, preempting illness, and feeding the world by improving the resiliency and sustainability of agriculture.

Flagship has been recognized twice on FORTUNE's "Change the World" list, an annual ranking of companies that have made a positive social and environmental impact through activities that are part of their core business strategies, and has been named four times to Fast Company's annual list of the World's Most Innovative Companies.

Position Overview

We are looking for a Director or Senior Director of Organizational Development to help shape how Flagship grows, evolves, and thrives. Reporting to the VP of Talent Development, you'll build the talent, leadership, and organizational capabilities that enable our science-driven enterprise to scale with purpose.

Key Responsibilities

Talent Management & Development

  • Design and evolve Flagship's talent management framework, including performance management, succession planning, career development, talent reviews, coaching, mentoring, and leadership development.
  • Foster a culture of continuous feedback and development supported by modern talent technologies and AI-enabled solutions.
  • Build career pathways and talent mobility programs that strengthen employee growth, retention, and organizational capability.

Organizational Development & Change

  • Build scalable organizational development and change management frameworks, tools, and playbooks.
  • Partner with senior leaders to lead change initiatives, strengthen leadership capability, and improve organizational effectiveness.
  • Develop change readiness, stakeholder engagement, and communication strategies that support successful transformation.

Strategic Communications & Program Leadership

  • Partner with HR, Communications, and business leaders to deliver clear, engaging communications that support organizational initiatives.
  • Lead a portfolio of high-impact OD programs from strategy through implementation, using data and analytics to measure success and continuously improve outcomes.
  • Align stakeholders, priorities, budgets, and resources across multiple concurrent initiatives.
What You'll Bring
  • 8+ years of experience in Organizational Development, Talent Management, Learning & Development, or a related HR discipline.
  • Proven success designing and scaling talent management programs, career development frameworks, and continuous feedback cultures.
  • Hands-on experience leading enterprise change management initiatives; Prosci, Kotter, or similar methodology is a plus.
  • Strong program and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple strategic initiatives in a matrixed organization.
  • Experience using modern talent management platforms (e.g., Workday, Lattice, Culture Amp, 15Five) and leveraging people analytics to drive decisions.
  • Experience in biotech, life sciences, pharmaceuticals, venture capital, or another innovation-driven environment is preferred.
  • Exceptional communication, collaboration, and influencing skills, with the ability to build trust across all levels.
  • Strategic, hands-on leader who thrives in ambiguity and enjoys building new capabilities.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; advanced degree or HR/change management certification is a plus.
  • Ability to work in our Cambridge, MA office four days per week.

Why Flagship Pioneering

This is a role for a builder - someone energized by creating what does not yet exist, inside one of the most consequential innovation organizations in the world.

  • Everything we build is oriented around improving human health and the health of our planet. The organizational systems you design will directly accelerate that mission.
  • You will shape OD practices across an enterprise and its entire ecosystem of platform companies - rare scope for any practitioner.
  • You will partner with world-class scientists, entrepreneurs, and capital managers. Curiosity and bold thinking are expected and celebrated.
  • This role sits at the intersection of strategy and execution, with direct partnership with senior leadership.
  • As Flagship grows, so does this function. There is genuine opportunity to expand your team and deepen your impact over time.

At Flagship, we recognize there is no perfect candidate. If you have some of the experience listed above but not all, please apply anyway. Experience comes in many forms, skills are transferable, and passion goes a long way. We are dedicated to building diverse and inclusive teams and look forward to learning more about your unique background.
