Job description

FT Cook for Rescue Mission
Do you love to cook and have a heart for hospitality? Be part of the mission and work in our new kitchen and facility!
Since 1952, Light of Life Rescue Mission has been a safe refuge for homeless and hurting people in the Pittsburgh area. We are seeking a full-time Cook to be a part of the Mission's exciting growth as we offer food services at multiple sites.
As well as preparing food, this individual plays a vital role working alongside residential guests, overseeing and teaching them basic food service and kitchen operations.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  1. Cooking and warming meals according to meal plan
  2. Maintaining kitchens at multiple sites per direction of supervisor
  3. Functioning as a caterer, delivering food by driving Light of Life vehicles.
  4. Ability to adapt and thrive during peak times of meal prep and service
  5. Working alongside residential guests assigned to Meal Ministry
  6. Oversee work of volunteers and interns

This is an excellent opportunity to use your expertise and creativity in planning and preparing meals to serve the homeless in our brand-new, state-of-the-art facility.
Due to the interface with the clients, all jobs at Light of Life require employees to:

Requirements/Certifications
  • ServSafe certificate a plus (will be required to pass test in the future)
  • Valid PA Driver's License with clean driving record
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs, occasionally
  • Organization and problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills; compassionate and patient; able to create a safe and comfortable environment.
  • Ability to work a rotating schedule including weekends.

Education/Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Previous cooking experience
  • Additional coursework in food service or culinary arts preferred
  • Previous experience with commercial kitchen equipment helpful
  • An understanding of addiction issues and homelessness a plus
