What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Test Kitchen Chef, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Test Kitchen Chef, you need a strong background in culinary arts, recipe development, and food safety, often supported by a culinary degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with recipe management software, virtual collaboration platforms, and kitchen equipment is essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you effectively test, refine, and share recipes with remote teams. These skills ensure high-quality, innovative recipe outcomes and smooth collaboration in a virtual kitchen environment.

How does a Remote Test Kitchen team typically collaborate to develop and refine new recipes?

In a Remote Test Kitchen, collaboration relies heavily on digital tools and clear communication. Team members—often including chefs, food scientists, and culinary assistants—share recipe ideas, feedback, and test results via video calls, shared documents, and virtual tasting sessions. It’s common to coordinate ingredient sourcing and testing schedules to ensure consistency across different locations. Regular check-ins help address challenges like equipment variations and ingredient availability, ensuring everyone stays aligned on recipe goals. This setup promotes creative input from diverse locations while maintaining a cohesive workflow.

What is a remote test kitchen?

A remote test kitchen is a culinary space or team that develops, tests, and refines recipes and food products from a distance, often using digital tools to collaborate. Chefs, recipe developers, and food scientists work remotely rather than in a centralized, physical kitchen. These kitchens are commonly used by food brands, publications, and meal kit companies to innovate and ensure quality, sometimes even offering virtual tastings and feedback sessions. This approach allows for flexibility, broader talent collaboration, and the ability to adapt quickly to new food trends.

Job description

America’s Test Kitchen is seeking a high-impact Senior Software Engineer to help build and scale our world-class digital platforms. In this role, you will be a key contributor to our engineering team, responsible for designing, building, and maintaining complex features across our MarTech stack and ecosystem.

The successful candidate is a seasoned developer who balances deep technical expertise with a pragmatic approach to problem-solving. You aren’t just writing code; you are ensuring technical excellence, mentoring fellow engineers, and helping us deliver a seamless digital experience to millions of home cooks.

Core Responsibilities

Technical Execution & Delivery:

  • Feature Ownership: Lead the development of complex, high-traffic features from concept to deployment, ensuring they are scalable, secure, and performant
  • Hands-on Development: Write clean, well-tested, and maintainable code across the full stack, setting a high bar for quality within the team
  • Code Quality: Participate in and lead rigorous code reviews, providing constructive feedback to maintain high engineering standards
  • System Reliability: Proactively identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and technical debt to ensure a seamless user experience

Architecture & Design:

  • Solution Design: Collaborate with product managers and architects to design robust solutions for our CMS, subscription billing, and MarTech integrations
  • Best Practices: Champion modern engineering practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, and comprehensive documentation
  • Technology Advancement: Help evaluate new tools and frameworks that can improve our development velocity and system efficiency

Collaboration & Mentorship:

  • Mentorship: Act as a technical resource for mid-level and junior developers, helping them grow their skills and navigate complex technical challenges without the tax of formal people management responsibilities
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Work closely with Data & Marketing Technology teams to translate user needs into technical requirements and actionable sprint tasks
Skills and Experience Required

Technical Expertise:

  • Professional Experience: 6+ years of hands-on software development experience in a product-driven environment
  • Core Stack: Expert-level proficiency in Node.js, React, and Python. Familiarity with Java is a significant plus
  • Cloud & DevOps: Strong experience with AWS services, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and modern CI/CD pipelines
  • Web Fundamentals: Deep understanding of RESTful APIs, database design (SQL/NoSQL), and front-end performance optimization

We recognize that strong candidates may not meet every qualification listed. If you’re excited about this role and believe you can contribute, we encourage you to apply.

Problem Solving & Communication:

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to debug complex, distributed systems and provide long-term solutions rather than quick fixes
  • Communication: Ability to explain technical trade-offs and architectural decisions to both technical teammates and non-technical stakeholders
  • Execution Mindset: Proven track record of delivering high-quality software on time in an agile environment

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience
  • Proven experience working on high-traffic, customer-facing web applications
  • A passion for continuous learning and a "test and learn" mindset

Location: This role is based in our Boston, MA headquarters (Seaport District) or is open to qualified remote applicants.

Salary Range:

$130,000 to $150,000

The range provided is based on what we reasonably expect to pay for this job as of the time of posting. The actual salary offered will be determined based on multiple factors, including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, job-related knowledge, skills, geographical location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
