Hibachi Chefs are culinary professionals who specialize in preparing and cooking food on a flat, open grill known as a hibachi or teppanyaki grill, often in front of guests. They are skilled not only in cooking Japanese-inspired dishes but also in entertaining diners with impressive knife skills, food tricks, and engaging performances. Hibachi Chefs play a key role in creating a unique dining experience that combines delicious food with live entertainment. They must have strong culinary skills, creativity, and excellent customer service abilities. Typically, they work in Japanese steakhouses or specialized hibachi restaurants.

What does a hibachi chef do?

As a hibachi chef, you work at a Japanese restaurant, preparing different types of grilled food which is served tableside. Typically you work on a large metal flat grill, and your duties include taking orders, talking with customers, and entertaining them while you cook, serving alcohol and making recommendations to customers about what to eat. Although often referred to as hibachi, the cuisine is actually what is referred to as teppanyaki in Japan.

They must stay focused and maintain safety while performing tricks and engaging with diners at the grill. Managing multiple orders at once, adapting to different customer preferences, and maintaining a clean, organized workspace in a fast-paced environment are also key aspects of the job. Strong communication and multitasking skills are essential to succeed and ensure a memorable dining experience.
