Food Services Director

School District Job Description

Position Summary

The Food Services Director is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and operation of the district's school nutrition program. This includes ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, maintaining high standards for food quality and safety, managing budgets, and leading staff to provide nutritious, appealing meals that support student health and learning.

Compensation: Hourly; Commensurate with Experience; IPERS included


Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Management

  • Direct and oversee all aspects of the district's food service program
  • Supervise, hire, train, and evaluate food service staff
  • Foster a positive, collaborative team culture across all kitchen sites

Compliance & Regulations

  • Ensure compliance with USDA, state, and local regulations for school nutrition programs
  • Maintain accurate records for audits, inspections, and reporting
  • Implement food safety and sanitation standards in accordance with health codes

Menu Planning & Nutrition

  • Plan and approve menus that meet USDA nutrition guidelines
  • Promote healthy food choices and accommodate special dietary needs

Financial Management

  • Monitor revenues and expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility
  • Oversee purchasing, inventory control, and cost efficiency

Operations & Logistics

  • Coordinate food production, distribution, and service across all schools
  • Ensure equipment is maintained and facilities are safe and efficient

Communication & Collaboration

  • Collaborate with district leadership, principals, and staff
  • Support district wellness initiatives and nutrition education efforts

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Food Service Management, or related field (preferred)
  • Experience in institutional or school food service management
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred
  • Recommended: Associates Degree or HS Diploma with at least 3 years of experience with School Food Service 

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of USDA school meal programs and regulations
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
  • Financial and budget management experience
  • Ability to analyze data and improve program efficiency
  • Commitment to student health and customer service

Certifications (Preferred/Required)

  • ServSafe Certification (or ability to obtain)
  • School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) credential (preferred)

Working Conditions

  • Combination of office and kitchen environments
  • Frequent standing, walking, and lifting (up to 3050 lbs)
  • Occasional travel between school sites

Evaluation

Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with district policy and administrative procedures.
