What Does an Engineering Analyst Do?

The job duties of an engineering analyst revolve around ensuring the quality and efficiency of an engineering project. You work in fields such as civil engineering, tech, manufacturing, and healthcare. As an engineering analyst, you use data and various pieces of technical information to analyze a project plan, schedule all tasks, and then recommend solutions to problems that may arise throughout the project. You may work with other engineers and designers to plan a new project or troubleshoot for an existing project. In this career, your responsibilities include providing reports on your analysis to the lead engineer or other stakeholders in the project.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering with extensive experience and advanced skills can earn $500,000 or more annually, often including bonuses and stock options. These roles typically require advanced degrees, certifications, and leadership responsibilities within high-demand industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, a solid foundation in engineering principles, and typically a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools (such as MATLAB, Python, or Excel), engineering modeling software, and sometimes certifications like Six Sigma are highly valued. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication enhance performance in this role. These skills and qualifications are essential for accurately interpreting data, optimizing engineering processes, and supporting informed decision-making within technical teams.

What are Engineering Analysts?

Engineering Analysts are professionals who use technical knowledge and analytical skills to assess engineering processes, systems, and data. They often work with engineers and project teams to collect and interpret data, identify inefficiencies, and recommend improvements. Their work may involve simulations, modeling, and preparing detailed reports to support engineering decisions and optimize performance. Engineering Analysts play a crucial role in ensuring projects meet quality, safety, and efficiency standards.

What is the difference between Engineering Analyst vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectEngineering AnalystMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like Six Sigma or PMPBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentOffice settings, data analysis, project coordinationDesign labs, manufacturing plants, testing facilities
Employer & Industry UsageConsulting firms, manufacturing, energy sectorsAutomotive, aerospace, HVAC, manufacturing

Engineering Analysts focus on data analysis, process improvement, and supporting engineering projects, often working in office environments. Mechanical Engineers are involved in designing, testing, and developing mechanical systems, working in labs or manufacturing settings. Both roles require engineering degrees but differ in daily tasks and work environments, making them distinct yet related careers in engineering industries.

Which engineering is best in future 2030?

Engineering analysts are expected to see growth in fields like software engineering, renewable energy, and data analytics by 2030, driven by technological advancements and sustainability efforts. Skills in programming, data management, and environmental systems will be highly valuable for future engineering roles.

What are high paying analyst jobs?

High paying analyst jobs include roles such as financial analysts, data analysts, and management analysts, often requiring strong analytical skills, proficiency with tools like Excel or SQL, and relevant certifications. Salaries vary by industry and experience but typically range from $70,000 to over $100,000 annually for senior positions.

How does an Engineering Analyst typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Engineering Analysts frequently work cross-functionally with teams such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance. They are responsible for gathering and analyzing data, then sharing insights with stakeholders to drive process improvements or solve technical challenges. Regular meetings, status updates, and collaborative problem-solving sessions are common, requiring strong communication skills and an ability to translate technical data for non-technical audiences. This collaborative environment helps ensure that projects are completed efficiently and meet organizational goals.

What does an engineering analyst do?

An engineering analyst evaluates engineering data, processes, and systems to identify issues and improve efficiency. They often use tools like CAD software and data analysis programs, and their work involves analyzing technical reports, conducting tests, and supporting engineering projects to optimize performance and ensure quality standards.

Job description

An Engineering Analyst is expected to provide technical support to project managers and senior engineering staff on a wide range of engineering analysis and condition assessment projects involving power plant steam piping, headers, tubing, turbines, and other critical mechanical equipment. The Engineering Analyst plays an integral role in supporting multidisciplinary project teams and contributes to the evaluation of potential failure mechanisms, identification of high-risk locations, assessment of remaining component life, prioritization of inspection activities, and determination of the current condition of in-service equipment.
This role supports condition assessment projects from initial scoping through execution and reporting and includes opportunities to participate in and support field assessments at customer facilities. Over time, the Engineering Analyst may assume increasing technical responsibility and project ownership, including leading defined technical tasks and supporting overall project management efforts. This position offers strong technical development and growth opportunities while contributing to high quality engineering solutions that help ensure the safe, reliable, and long-term operation of critical energy and industrial infrastructure.
Primary Responsibilities:
•  Assist with engineering analysis and condition assessment projects involving power plant and industrial mechanical components
•  Create representative solid models and drawings of equipment using SolidWorks or other software
•  Perform thermal and structural finite element analyses using commercial software such as ANSYS and Abaqus
•  Support ASME Code calculations, fitness-for-service evaluations, and remaining life assessments
•  Work with engineering and inspection data to evaluate component condition, damage mechanisms, and inspection priorities
•  Assist with field assessments at customer sites, including supporting nondestructive examination activities such as metallurgical replication, hardness testing, and advanced ultrasonic methods
•  Prepare and contribute to technical reports, calculations, and client presentations documenting findings and recommendations
•  Support project execution activities, including data review, documentation, and coordination with engineering and inspection teams
•  Assist with internal engineering initiatives focused on process improvement, methodology development, automation, and technical quality enhancements
Required Skills/Qualifications:
•  Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline
•  0–3 years of engineering experience (internship, co-op, or professional experience preferred)
•  Interest in mechanical systems, stress analysis, and solving complex technical problems
•  Coursework or exposure to finite element analysis, fracture mechanics, fatigue, or heat transfer preferred
•  Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel; experience with databases, programming, or automation tools is a plus
•  Familiarity with ANSYS, Abaqus, and/or SolidWorks preferred
•  Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
•  High attention to detail and commitment to technical accuracy and quality
•  Ability to communicate clearly in both written and verbal formats
•  Willingness to learn, take initiative, and support a variety of engineering tasks
•  Expected to pursue Professional Engineer (PE) licensure
Travel and Working Conditions
•  Approximately 25% travel annually, primarily during scheduled plant outage periods
•  Field work at power generation and industrial facilities, with exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, and humidity
•  May require working at moderate heights and in confined spaces.
•  Must be able to meet site access requirements, including respirator fit testing, physicals, and drug screening
