Embedded in an engineering team under an Engineering Team Lead, they take ownership of the full lifecycle of assigned work - implementation, testing, deployment support, and operational follow-through - while developing a strong working understanding of the insurance domain. The SE2 is accountable for delivering assigned work with quality and with increasing independence.
Reporting and Scope:

How the role fits the operating model:
The Software Engineer II is on the supply side of the prioritization triangle, doing the build. They turn requirements from the Team Lead and Delivery Lead into working software on the policy administration platform, while building practical fluency in the insurance domain - quoting, binding, endorsements, rating, forms, and policy lifecycle - that makes the work make sense. This role is expected to operate with moderate independence, seek clarification when requirements are evolving, and make sound technical decisions between check-ins.
Key responsibilities:
Build and maintain. Builds and maintains APIs, workflows, integrations, and tooling supporting underwriting and policy administration systems. Writes modular, maintainable code and contributes to technical design discussions.
Deliver independently. Owns assigned features, enhancements, bug fixes, tests, and documentation from implementation through validation and operational support.
Implement operational workflows. Works closely with engineering leads and underwriting or business stakeholders to turn evolving requirements into practical, reliable technical solutions.
Integrations. Contributes to integrations between internal systems, external vendors, and policy administration platforms, with attention to reliability, maintainability, and downstream impact.
Production support. Participates in debugging, testing, automation, monitoring, and operational support for production systems. Identifies root causes, communicates status clearly, and follows through on resolution.
Tooling. Helps improve internal engineering tooling, developer workflows, and team practices that increase delivery speed and quality.
AI-assisted engineering. Uses AI-assisted engineering workflows daily, including Claude Code or similar tools, to improve development speed, quality, and maintainability.
Learn and apply the domain. Builds practical knowledge of insurance domain concepts including quoting, binding, endorsements, rating, forms, and policy lifecycle, and applies that context to technical decisions.
Competencies:
Technical ability. Delivers features, components, bug fixes, tests, and documentation with moderate independence. Writes modular, maintainable code; understands tradeoffs; and takes operational responsibility for assigned work.
Communication. Clearly communicates progress, blockers, risks, and decisions. Keeps stories and tasks current, asks clarifying questions, and contributes constructively to technical discussions and healthy debate.
Critical thinking. Breaks down loosely defined requests, adapts approach as new information emerges, and makes reasonable technical decisions between check-ins. Looks for simple, practical solutions that meet business needs.
Organizational contribution. Participates actively in team rituals, shares observations and feedback, supports team standards, and contributes to onboarding or knowledge-sharing where appropriate.
Business impact. Understands how assigned work supports underwriting and policy administration outcomes. Delivers work on time, considers operational impact, and contributes ideas that improve reliability, efficiency, or stakeholder experience.
Qualifications:
4+ years of professional software engineering experience.
Strong Python or JavaScript/TypeScript fundamentals.
Experience building or maintaining APIs, workflows, integrations, or internal tooling.
Ability to deliver assigned features and components with moderate independence.
Comfortable working in evolving requirements and asking thoughtful clarifying questions.
Experience with testing, debugging, automation, monitoring, and production support practices.
Comfortable using AI-assisted development tools; Claude Code experience strongly preferred.
Interest in learning or applying insurance, underwriting, or policy administration domain knowledge.

Candidates should be comfortable with an on-site presence to support collaboration, team leadership, and cross-functional partnership.
