Job Summary
The Grain Elevator Technician (GET) III level performs all of the GET I and II tasks with minimal supervision and has at least 3 years of experience working in a grain elevator. In addition, the GET III performs all aspects of grain elevator maintenance (welding, cutting, fabrication, installation, lubrication, repair and replacement, troubleshooting, etc.). Each employee is responsible for their own safe work behavior and the safety of their coworkers. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs job tasks in a safe manner and follows compliance with UGC safety programs and procedures.
- Takes responsibility for own safe work behavior.
- Maintains work areas and facilities properly.
- Provides courteous and responsive customer service.
- Performs or assists in routine maintenance and repairs.
- Assists in the unloading or loading of grain commodities by truck, rail and barge.Â
- Weighs or measures materials and products, using scales or other measuring instruments.Â
- Delegates daily tasks to lower-level Elevator Technicians and Elevator Operators (seasonal/temporary staff).
- Able to train lower-level Elevator Technicians and Operators on all Elevator tasks.
- Maintains equipment, machinery, and workstations, using hand tools, shovels, brooms, chemicals, hoses, and lubricants.Â
- Observes and listens to machinery and conveyor operations and monitors lights, dials, and gauges, in order to maintain specified operating levels and to detect equipment malfunctions.Â
- Informs supervisors of potential and/or actual equipment malfunctions and suggests repair options. Performs the repair work in coordination with the Assistant and/or Grain Elevator Manager
Required Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED degree and/or equivalent training required.
- At least 3 years of experience working in a grain elevator.
- Must have valid driver’s license to drive company vehicles.
- Maintenance experience with mechanical aptitude is required.
- Proven ability to improve elevator operations.Â
- Working knowledge of computer programs such as MS suite, and agriculture software programs such as Agris, and One Weigh required.
- Proven interpersonal skills; must support a team-oriented and inclusive approach with a high level of integrity and reliability.Â
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with employees and customers.
- Ability to understand and follow all safety guidelines.Â
- Must be able to work extended hours as needed.
- An elevator’s volume and location may be taken into consideration when determining the level of position needed at a particular location.
Physical Demands and Requirements
- This is a physical job that includes both indoor and outdoor work in all types of weather and temperature environments. The job includes working in and around grain dust. In addition, this position can be physically strenuous from time to time. Must be able to work in this environment.Â

- You will be expected to be able to work in tight and confined spaces, walk, climb, bend, kneel, lift, grip, grasp, push, and pull various tools and equipment. May be required to ride a belt lift and occasionally work at significant heights with requisite balance and equilibrium. Ability to frequently lift, push, pull up to 50 pounds and occasionally more. This job will require the ability to ascend/descend ladders.
- Personal protective equipment, including hardhats, gloves, safety glasses, safety shoes, and respiratory protection and ear protection are required.
- Requires the ability to read and comprehend written and oral operational and safety instructions and related rules, policies, and memo, and communicate clearly with your coworkers and supervisors.
- Must have vision that permits close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. When grading grain, the ability to identify and distinguish colors is also important.
- Ability to detect odors and the ability to understand and discern safety warning systems.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
