Required CredentialsBachelor’s or Master’s in CS or related, extensive experience, leadership skillsBachelor’s or Master’s in CS or related, strong technical background, leadership experience

The main difference is that the Director Software Development focuses on strategic leadership and overseeing multiple teams, while the Software Engineering Manager concentrates on managing individual teams and project execution. How does a Director of Software Development typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

As a Director of Software Development, you are expected to provide both technical direction and effective team leadership. This often means splitting your time between high-level architecture decisions, code reviews, and staying updated on emerging technologies, while also focusing on coaching managers, developing talent, and fostering a collaborative team environment. Balancing these areas requires strong delegation skills, setting clear goals and expectations, and maintaining open communication channels. Many directors find success by empowering technical leads to own day-to-day technical decisions, allowing them to focus on strategic planning, cross-functional alignment, and organizational growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director of Software Development, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director of Software Development, you need extensive experience in software engineering, leadership, project management, and a relevant technical degree. Familiarity with development frameworks, cloud platforms, Agile methodologies, and certifications like PMP or Scrum Master are highly valuable. Strong communication, strategic thinking, and team-building skills help drive cross-functional alignment and motivate high-performing teams. These skills are essential for delivering successful software products, managing complex projects, and fostering innovation within the organization.

Job description

Just to recap our current situation, our in house recruiter is looking to find two full time developers. Until we find the right candidates, we would like to see about adding temporary resources to help us stay productive. If you happen to have either a junior or mid-level candidate in your pipeline that fills our requirements we would love to talk to them. I see this being up to a 6 month opportunity. Please share with me your typical ‘friends and family’ rate so I can make sure we are working within our budget. I believe Davion came on as a junior before at around $75/Hr. I don’t have any previous reference for a mid tier developer.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop software solutions using AWS cloud based services including Cognito, Appsync, API Gateway, and Lambda.
  • Integrate with AWS cloud based storage including DynamoDB and RDS hosted Postgres.
  • Implement front end features using javascript framework tool, Vue.js, utilizing GraphQL.
  • Collaborate with members of an Agile development team as well as the business team to deliver new software features and enhancements.
  • Engage in Agile/Scrum software development practices such as daily stand-ups, user story estimation, sprint retrospectives, and sprint planning.
  • Participate in code reviews with teammates.
  • Work with lead developers, architects, and peers to design creative solutions.
  • Develop unit tests and automated integration tests.
  • Participate in the development of solutions using CI/CD, automated builds, and AWS DevOps.

Desired Qualifications and Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work on highly collaborative teams to successfully design, develop, test and deploy cloud based solutions.
  • UI development experience using Vue.js (or similar javascript framework)
  • AWS backend development experience using Lambda/Node.js.
  • Source control management using Git.
  • Experience interacting with relational and non-relational(no-sql) databases.
  • Unit testing best practices.
  • Familiarity with Agile project management methodologies.

Our preference is full stack developers but for the junior developer position we would be willing to look at candidates with 2-3 years of experience in either the frontend or backend using the technologies listed above. The key would be able to show value as soon as possible with the least amount of ‘hand holding’ considering our small team size.

For the mid-level developer we are looking for someone with 3+ years who has worked on similar full stack projects with experience with a frontend javascript framework and cloud based micro services on the backend.
