What is a controller?

A controller is high-level accounting position in a firm or company. They often report directly to the CFO (Chief Financial Officer) and are responsible for budgets, audits, and financial reports, as well as ensuring the company complies with all tax codes and regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Controller, you need a strong background in accounting principles, financial analysis, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and often a CPA certification. Proficiency with ERP systems, advanced Excel, and financial reporting software is essential for managing complex financial data. Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top Controllers apart. These skills and qualities ensure accurate financial oversight, compliance, and strategic decision-making for organizational success.

What are some common challenges controllers face when managing financial reporting and compliance?

Controllers often encounter challenges in ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial reports, particularly when juggling complex transactions or multiple entities. Staying current with evolving accounting standards and regulatory requirements can also be demanding, as it requires continual learning and adaptation. Additionally, Controllers must coordinate closely with cross-functional teams, such as auditors and department heads, to address discrepancies and streamline processes, making strong communication and problem-solving skills essential.

Controller Description

Our client, a privately owned specialty construction company ($15-$20M), is looking for a Controller to join their team just outside of Estero, FL. Given the specialized nature of their work, they operate in a relatively unique market with limited direct competition, providing a level of stability that can be difficult to find in the construction industry.

This is more than a traditional Controller role. The owner is looking for someone who can take ownership of the financial function, help him understand what is happening in the business and bring ideas to the table. You'll have a lot of visibility into the business and will be expected to ask questions, dig into the numbers and understand what is really driving them.

There is an opportunity to improve processes, systems and controls, so this is a good fit for someone who enjoys figuring out what isn't working and putting a better process in place. You'll need to be comfortable being hands-on with the details while also stepping back and looking at the bigger picture. If you're looking for a role where you can maintain the status quo, this probably isn't the opportunity for you. If you're looking for a new challenge where your opinion will not only be valued, but sought after, this could be a great match.

Controller Responsibilities

  • Own accounting across 2 primary operating companies and related holding companies
  • Lead closing, reconciliations, GL maintenance and timely cash-basis financial reporting
  • Provide clear financial reporting, variance analysis and insight into business performance
  • Build/manage budgets and forecasts, track actuals vs. budget and support ownership decisions
  • Oversee project costing and profitability, ensuring costs hit the appropriate jobs/entities
  • Improve project margin visibility and identify issues with costs, billing and transfers
  • Manage cash flow, working capital, forecasting and banking activity
  • Strengthen internal controls and accounting processes across the business
  • Optimize accounting systems and reduce reliance on manual reporting
  • Lead the accounting team (4) while improving processes, accountability and efficiency
  • Coordinate with the CPA on tax compliance, reporting, lender needs and insurance audits

Controller Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting required
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting including people leadership experience
  • Strong full-cycle accounting experience including leading month-end closing
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and variance analysis
  • Experience managing multiple entities and/or complex accounting systems and processes
