Contract Operations information

What are some typical challenges faced in a Contract Operations role, and how can new hires effectively navigate them?

Professionals in Contract Operations often encounter challenges such as managing multiple contracts with tight deadlines, ensuring compliance with evolving regulations, and coordinating with various internal departments, such as legal, sales, and procurement. New hires can navigate these obstacles by developing strong organizational skills, proactively communicating with stakeholders, and staying up-to-date on relevant policies and contract management software. Building relationships with cross-functional teams and seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues can also help ease the transition and contribute to long-term success in the role.

What is the difference between Contract Operations vs Contract Management?

AspectContract OperationsContract Management
Primary FocusExecuting, monitoring, and supporting contract processesCreating, negotiating, and overseeing contract terms
ResponsibilitiesContract administration, compliance, and workflow managementContract drafting, negotiations, and strategic oversight
Skills & CertificationsContract administration, project management, attention to detailLegal knowledge, negotiation skills, contract law certifications
Work EnvironmentOperational teams, legal, procurement departmentsLegal, sales, procurement, and executive teams

Contract Operations focuses on the execution and support of contracts, ensuring smooth workflows and compliance. Contract Management involves the strategic creation, negotiation, and oversight of contract terms. While they overlap, Contract Operations is more about day-to-day contract support, whereas Contract Management emphasizes contract strategy and negotiations.

What are Contract Operations?

Contract Operations refers to the processes and activities involved in managing contracts throughout their lifecycle, from drafting and negotiation to execution, compliance, and renewal or termination. Professionals in this role oversee contract creation, ensure adherence to terms, monitor deadlines, and facilitate communication between stakeholders. Their work helps organizations minimize risks, maintain compliance, and optimize the value of their contractual agreements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Contract Operations, and why are they important?

To thrive in Contract Operations, you need a solid understanding of contract management, attention to detail, and analytical skills, often supported by a business or legal background. Familiarity with contract lifecycle management (CLM) software, compliance tools, and knowledge of relevant regulations or certifications (such as CFCM or CPCM) is typically required. Strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help professionals excel in managing multiple contracts and stakeholder expectations. These skills ensure accurate contract execution, risk mitigation, and efficient operations in a regulatory-driven environment.

We are seeking a Junior Commercial Contracts Lawyer to support high-volume client projects, with a strong and growing focus on supply chain and manufacturing-related contracting work. This role is well suited for junior to mid-level commercial generalists who bring solid core commercial contracting experience and exposure to manufacturing or supply chain environments, even if not a subject-matter expert.

Responsibilities:
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a high volume of commercial agreements, including NDAs, MSAs, distribution agreements, supply and procurement agreements, and services agreements.
  • Support supply chain and manufacturing-focused contracts, including vendor, supplier, and operations-related agreements.
  • Provide practical, business-oriented legal guidance on contract terms, risk allocation, and negotiation strategy.
  • Assist clients with large commercial contracting initiatives, including contract standardization and remediation projects.
  • Support contract lifecycle management (CLM) efforts, including implementation, optimization, and ongoing contract operations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders (procurement, operations, finance, and compliance) to align contracts with business objectives.
  • Contribute to contract playbooks, templates, and process improvements to support scalable contracting operations.
  • Support or interface with international teams or international counterparties, as needed.
Qualifications:
  • JD or equivalent, with active bar membership in good standing.
  • 2-5 years of post-qualification experience, ideally in-house or in a commercial-focused practice.
  • Demonstrated experience drafting and negotiating core commercial contracts.
  • Ability to manage high-volume workloads efficiently while maintaining strong attention to detail.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Comfortable working remotely or in hybrid environments.
  • Experience with CLM system implementation or optimization.
  • Exposure to international contracts or Japanese-facing clients.
  • Experience working with cross-functional and multinational teams.
  • Comfort operating as a generalist across multiple contract types and industries.
Preferred Skills:
  • Supply chain and/or manufacturing experience, including exposure to procurement, vendor, supplier, or operations-driven contracts (SME status not required).
  • Background in or support of manufacturing-related industries; any industry experience is acceptable if tied to manufacturing operations.
  • Experience supporting large-scale commercial contracting projects.
  • Familiarity with or hands-on experience in CLM systems and contract operations.
  • International exposure, including experience working with or supporting international companies, subsidiaries, or cross-border contracts.
  • Junior/mid-level commercial generalist profile suited for cost-conscious engagements and scalable legal support models.
Compensation:

The estimated total compensation for full-time Axiom attorney roles is $104,500-325,000 per year and for non-attorney roles is $71,250-309,750 per year.ย Compensation decisions are based on various factors, including, but not limited to, experience, skills, certifications, location, and business needs.ย  Employees may be eligible for additional benefits, including health, dental, and vision insurance; paid holidays and PTO; flexible work arrangements; and professional development opportunities and tools.
