Description The hiring range for this position is $80,081 - $89,316. The full range for this position is $80,081 - $111,192. The Child Protection Specialist plays a critical role in protecting the safety and well-being of children in Kandiyohi County by conducting child protection assessments and investigations, providing supportive casework services to families, and collaborating with community partners to strengthen family functioning and child safety.

This position is responsible for screening child protection reports, participating in intake rotation, developing case plans, preparing court documentation, and testifying in legal proceedings as needed. The role includes providing intensive upfront engagement with families, connecting families to culturally appropriate services and supports, engaging family-identified safety networks, and utilizing trauma-informed and Signs of Safety practices to promote child safety and timely reunification whenever possible. The agency utilizes equitable screening practices and collaborates with relative search staff, Signs of Safety coordinators, and case aides to support children and families impacted by substance use and other safety concerns.

Strong communication skills, sound judgment, emotional resilience, and the ability to work effectively within legal frameworks and agency policies while maintaining confidentiality at all times are essential. Job Duties Provide supportive casework services to families to improve overall family functioning and child safety in compliance with Minnesota statutes and agency policy. Conduct child protection assessments and investigations, including interviewing children, parents, family members, and collateral contacts.

Participate in the intake rotation process and respond to assigned child protection matters in a timely manner. Conduct intensive upfront work with families to identify safety concerns, strengths, supports, and service needs. Engage family-identified supports and participate in safety network and Signs of Safety meetings to promote child safety and family stability.

Refer families to culturally appropriate services and community resources, particularly in cases involving substance use and opioid-related concerns. Screen and assess child protection reports to determine appropriate response and intervention. Develop, implement, and monitor individualized case plans focused on child safety, stability, and family well-being.

Prepare and maintain accurate and timely case documentation, including assessments, case notes, court reports, and related records. Testify in court proceedings and provide professional recommendations regarding child safety and family services. Collaborate with schools, law enforcement, healthcare providers, mental health professionals, service agencies, and other community partners to meet the needs of children and families.

Utilize trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices when engaging with children and families. Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Social Work or closely related human services field required Prior child protection or family services experience preferred Bilingual language skills preferred Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required Must pass a criminal background check and meet DHS requirements for working with vulnerable populations Supplemental Information Skills and Abilities Strong knowledge of child protection laws, practices, and reporting requirements. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare professional reports and court documentation. Ability to conduct sensitive interviews and engage families with empathy, professionalism, and sound judgment.

Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously. Ability to assess risk, make decisions under pressure, and respond effectively in crisis situations. Effective collaboration and teamwork skills in multidisciplinary environments.

Commitment to ethical, trauma-informed, and culturally competent practice. High level of discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality. Proficiency with electronic case management systems and standard office software.

Physical Demands Ability to sit, stand, and move throughout the day to perform both office and fieldwork. Ability to travel frequently within and outside the county for home visits, court appearances, and meetings. Must be able to lift and carry files or supplies up to 25 pounds occasionally.
