To thrive as a Benefits Specialist, you need strong knowledge of employee benefits programs, compliance regulations, and HR practices, typically supported by a degree in human resources or a related field. Proficiency with HR information systems (HRIS), benefits administration platforms, and familiarity with regulations like ERISA and COBRA are essential. Benefits specialists often navigate challenges such as keeping up with changing regulations, managing open enrollment periods, and ensuring clear communication with employees about their options. These can include health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, dental and vision coverage, life insurance, and other perks. Benefits are designed to support the well-being of employees and can play a significant role in job satisfaction and retention. The specific benefits offered can vary widely depending on the employer, industry, and location.

Job description

Why You Should Want to Work Here
Yes, we provide competitive pay and benefits, but that's not why. You're going to learn a lot here, you'll be given as much responsibility as you can handle, your ideas will help us improve the industry, and you'll be a key part of an organization committed to flexibility and social action. We keep "corporate" meetings to a minimum, and we have zero red tape We just want clients to be serviced really well, and we believe work should be a two-way street: when the company needs a hand to say, meet a client deadline, the employee steps up to help; when the employee needs a hand to balance work and life, the company steps up and provides flexibility. It's not complicated. It is a breath of fresh air, and it's what work should be.
Overview
We're seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Benefits Consultant to manage a diverse book of business consisting of small to mid-size clients across multiple industries. This role combines strategic consulting, client relationship management, and deep expertise in employee benefits, all within a flexible, remote environment that supports work-life balance. Candidates must reside in the New England area and be available to travel to local client sites as needed.
  • Manage a book of business consisting of small to mid-size clients in various industries; occasional travel required to clients across the U.S., particularly in New England.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for clients and their employees on insurance coverages, products, and services available in the marketplace while proactively developing and sustaining strong relationships with clients and carriers.
  • Prepare and lead client meetings, including open enrollment, strategy sessions, and other benefit-related presentations while also identifying opportunities to enhance client service.
  • Obtain, organize, analyze and review requests for proposals and plan analyses, negotiate with carriers, and recommend renewal actions. Analyze plan designs, funding arrangements, and employee contribution options to provide data-driven recommendations.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, state and federal regulations, and communicate relevant updates to clients and adhere to plan rules, legal and regulatory requirements, and compliance.
  • Create and update benefit guides, employee communications, and 5500 filings/SARs while also ensuring all client resources and communications are accurate following open enrollment or coverage changes.
  • Conduct and prepare benefits benchmarking analyses for clients.
  • Address ongoing benefits enrollment and claims issues as needed.

Skills Required:
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks effectively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Positive, client-first attitude with a commitment to going the extra mile
  • Collaborative team player with a willingness to assist others

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Active Health/Life/Accident state licensure
  • 3 plus years of experience in the health and welfare benefits brokerage industry
  • Experience with health and welfare benefits plans including medical, dental, life, and disability, with understanding of design and compliance requirements
  • Experience with self-funded plans and claims reporting/analysis
  • Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint

* Remote/hybrid work schedule is supported, however, the consultant must reside in New England area to be able to travel to local clients as needed and quarterly staff meetings.
