Job description

Assistant Controller

Location: West Hollywood / Hollywood, California
Schedule: Primarily onsite with some hybrid flexibility
Compensation: $120,000-$150,000 base salary plus bonus

About the Opportunity

Our client, an established multi-location retail business, is seeking a hands-on Assistant Controller to help lead its accounting and finance operations.

This is a high-trust position with responsibility for payments, internal controls, financial processes, and day-to-day accounting discipline. The Assistant Controller will work closely with company ownership, outside accounting support, and tax advisors to strengthen the finance function and improve financial visibility across multiple business entities and retail locations.

The right person will be comfortable working in a fast-moving environment, improving developing processes, and taking ownership of critical financial responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting and finance activities across the business
  • Manage the payment and disbursement process, ensuring payments are accurate, timely, and properly approved
  • Strengthen internal controls, approval workflows, and segregation of duties
  • Partner with ownership, outside accountants, bookkeepers, and tax advisors
  • Support month-end and year-end close activities
  • Review journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting
  • Monitor cash activity, payments, and other core accounting transactions
  • Help standardize accounting and financial processes across multiple locations and entities
  • Improve the accuracy and timeliness of information provided to outside accounting partners
  • Hold internal teams accountable to established financial controls and procedures
  • Support audit preparation, documentation, and financial compliance
  • Travel periodically to retail locations as needed
  • Work directly with senior leadership on accounting and finance priorities

Qualifications

  • Strong accounting background with hands-on experience in journal entries, reconciliations, close activities, and financial controls
  • Experience managing payments, disbursements, or accounts payable processes
  • Experience working with multiple entities, locations, or business units
  • Strong understanding of internal controls and approval processes
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred
  • CPA is a plus but not required
  • Cannabis industry experience is preferred but not required
  • Experience in a regulated, multi-location, retail, or similarly complex environment will be considered
  • Experience working alongside outside accountants, bookkeepers, or tax professionals
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Ability to work effectively with developing systems and improve existing processes
  • High level of integrity, discretion, and sound judgment
  • Ability to work primarily onsite in the West Hollywood / Hollywood area
  • Ability to pass a background check due to the positionโ€™s payment authority and level of responsibility

What Success Looks Like

  • Ownership is no longer responsible for managing the daily payment process
  • Payments and financial approvals are completed accurately and on time
  • Internal controls are stronger and consistently followed
  • Accounting processes are more organized and standardized
  • Outside accounting partners receive cleaner and more timely financial information
  • Leadership has greater confidence in the accuracy, visibility, and discipline of the finance function

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply with a current resume.
