Job description

Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated Pharmacy Assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate will assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining patient records, and providing exceptional customer service.

The Pharmacy Assistant reports directly to the Pharmacy Manager, while also working under the direct supervision of any Pharmacist on duty during the same shift. The Pharmacy Assistant is responsible for providing exceptional customer service and patient care and provides technical and administrative support to the Pharmacy team.

The below represents the general details associated with the principal functions of the position and should not be construed as a detailed job description. The incumbent may be required to perform other job-related duties as assigned. Please note that all of the duties and responsibilities outlined below must be carried out in accordance with all pharmacy legislation and with all internal patient care/customer service policies and procedures.

Pharmaceutical Distribution

  • Assist in the gathering of information to create and maintain complete patient records
  • Assess prescriptions for clarity, completeness, authenticity, and compliance with legal requirements
  • Interpret prescriptions, perform any required calculations, and ensure the prescription information is recorded accurately on the patient record
  • Communicate with patients/customers and process prescriptions according to the pharmacy’s policies and procedures such as, but not limited to, designated “in and out” areas, patient counselling requirements and areas, and wait times
  • Ensure appropriate patient record file maintenance by adhering to scanning and storage policies and procedures
  • Submit prescriptions for adjudication and manage coverage/payment related issues in cooperation with the patient and Pharmacist
  • Select, prepare, package, and label prescriptions for both commercially available products and extemporaneous compounds
  • Ensure prescriptions are checked by the Pharmacist and regulated Pharmacy Technician (if applicable) prior to being distributed to the patient
  • Complete appropriate documentation for all tasks including but not limited to filling prescriptions and filing procedures
  • Understand and adhere to the quality assurance policies/procedures for job performance management, medication error risk management and the handling of narcotic/controlled substances (this includes, but is not limited to, assisting in the documentation of all medication and patient care incidents using appropriate protocols including “near misses”)
  • Always maintain the confidential and sensitive nature of the pharmacy/patient relationship in accordance with legislation and standards
  • Enter and process sale of prescription and other purchases using the POS cash register

Pharmacy Assistants are not permitted to perform final checks on prescriptions nor override and/or approve any clinical messages that occur when processing prescriptions such as drug-drug or drug-condition interactions

Pharmacy Health Care Services/Program Responsibilities

  • Communicate to patients/customers basic details of the service such as, but not limited to, the name of service/program, and cost
  • Register patients/customers for the service/program
  • Refer interested patients/customers to a Pharmacist or Pharmacy Technician for more details
  • Inform the Pharmacist and/or Pharmacy Technician of patients/customers who are interested in the program
  • Gather patient information and prepare applicable files/forms for Pharmacists and/or Pharmacy Technicians
  • Make appointment reminder calls
  • Prepare and organize service/program resources including, but not limited to, documentation forms and marketing materials
  • Medication Delivery

JOB REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Good organization, self-motivation, effective communication, attention to detail, and customer service skills
  • Previous pharmacy experience considered an asset
  • Can work flexible schedules including evenings and weekends
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment

  • MS 365 apps Competence
