Job description

Title: Assistant Controller

Location: Red Deer, AB (Full-time On-site)

Salary: $75,000–85,000 per year


In this Assistant Controller role, you'll work closely with the Controller to support the organization's financial operations, ensuring accurate reporting, regulatory compliance, and strong financial controls. You'll play a key role in month-end close, financial analysis, budgeting, inventory and cost accounting, while partnering with departments across the business to support operational and strategic decision-making.


Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and accruals
  • Analyze financial results, investigate variances, and provide meaningful insights to leadership
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities
  • Review accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions for accuracy
  • Maintain fixed asset records, depreciation schedules, and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Support inventory accounting, production costing, inventory reconciliations, and cost of goods sold calculations
  • Work closely with Operations to ensure inventory accuracy and improve financial processes
  • Assist with cash flow reporting, cash forecasting, and banking activities
  • Prepare audit working papers and coordinate requests from external auditors
  • Support GST/HST, corporate tax, payroll remittances, and other regulatory reporting requirements
  • Assist in maintaining strong internal controls, financial policies, and accounting procedures
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, reporting, and operational efficiencies
  • Provide guidance and support to members of the accounting team while collaborating cross-functionally


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related field
  • CPA designation (or currently working toward completion) is preferred
  • 3–7 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Previous manufacturing experience is considered a strong asset
  • Experience with inventory and cost accounting in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting, reconciliations, budgeting, and forecasting
  • Experience working with ERP systems and advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Highly analytical with exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • A collaborative professional who communicates effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Someone who takes ownership, demonstrates integrity, and continuously looks for ways to improve processes
