What is an accountant bookkeeper?

Accountant bookkeepers are professionals who handle both accounting and bookkeeping tasks for a business or organization. They are responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, recording transactions, reconciling accounts, and sometimes preparing basic financial statements. Their work ensures that all financial data is up-to-date and compliant with relevant regulations. While bookkeepers typically focus on recording financial transactions, accountant bookkeepers may also assist with payroll, tax preparation, and budgeting. They play a crucial role in supporting business operations and decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an accountant bookkeeper, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accountant Bookkeeper, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial recordkeeping, and typically an associate’s degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage, as well as proficiency in Excel, is crucial. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and integrity are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure accurate financial records, regulatory compliance, and trustworthy management of an organization's finances.

How do accountant bookkeepers typically balance managing day-to-day transactions with preparing for monthly or annual financial reporting deadlines?

Accountant Bookkeepers often juggle daily tasks such as recording transactions, reconciling accounts, and managing invoices, while also preparing for larger reporting deadlines like month-end or year-end close. To stay organized, many professionals utilize accounting software and establish clear routines for weekly and monthly reviews. Collaboration with colleagues across departments is common, especially when gathering documentation or clarifying entries. Effective time management and proactive communication are key to ensuring both routine bookkeeping and periodic reporting are completed accurately and on schedule.

Job description

Are you an experienced accounting professional who enjoys taking ownership, solving problems, and being the person others can count on?

We are a well-established, locally owned Santa Cruz organization with more than 50 years of success, and we are looking for a talented Full Charge Bookkeeper / Accountant to join our team. Our reputation has been built on integrity, excellence, and strong, long-term relationships with our clients and employees.

The Opportunity:

This is a hands-on, full-cycle accounting position with responsibility for the accounting needs of multiple entities. You will work closely with management, clients, and outside professionals and will have the opportunity to use your expertise across a broad range of accounting functions.

The ideal candidate is someone who is organized, detail-oriented, proactive, and confident working independently. If you enjoy variety, take pride in accurate financials, and like being the go to accounting resource, this could be an excellent fit.

What You'll Do:

  • Take ownership of the full accounting cycle, including AP, AR, general ledger, and month-end close
  • Prepare and process payroll, including quarterly and annual payroll tax filings
  • Complete accurate and timely bank and account reconciliations
  • Maintain organized financial records and supporting documentation
  • Prepare monthly financial statements
  • Assist with budgets, forecasting, and cash flow management
  • Work closely with management and external CPAs on audits, tax filings, and financial planning
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, company policies, and best practices
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, efficiency, and internal controls
  • Provide financial insight and recommendations to help management make informed decisions

What We're Looking For:

  • 3–5+ years of experience in full-charge bookkeeping or accounting
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and full-cycle accounting
  • Experience managing accounting for multiple entities
  • Proficiency with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage, Yardi, AppFolio, or similar platforms
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy
  • Strong organization and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with management and team members
  • Professionalism and discretion when handling confidential financial information
  • A problem-solver who takes initiative and doesn't wait to be asked to address an issue

Why Join Us?

  • Competitive salary and benefits
  • Bonus opportunities
  • A supportive and collaborative team that values experience, initiative, and accountability
  • The stability of an organization with more than five decades of success
  • A role where you can take ownership rather than simply process transactions
  • Exposure to a wide range of accounting responsibilities and the opportunity to expand your expertise
  • A professional environment where your ideas and contributions are welcomed
  • Long-term opportunity to grow with an established organization

Ready for Your Next Opportunity?

If you're an experienced accounting professional looking for a position where you can use your knowledge, take ownership, and be an integral part of a successful organization, we'd love to hear from you.
