What does an Accessibility Intern do?

An Accessibility Intern assists organizations in making their digital content, products, and environments more accessible to people with disabilities. Their responsibilities often include testing websites and applications for accessibility issues, documenting findings, and suggesting improvements based on guidelines like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). They may also help develop accessible documents, participate in user research with individuals with disabilities, and support training initiatives. This role is a great entry point for learning about inclusive design and the legal and ethical considerations of accessibility.

The main difference between an Accessibility Intern and an Accessibility Specialist lies in experience, responsibilities, and career stage. Interns are typically students or recent graduates gaining initial exposure, while specialists are experienced professionals managing accessibility projects independently. Both roles focus on improving digital accessibility but differ significantly in scope and expectations.

What jobs can I do if I can't walk?

An Accessibility Intern role involves tasks that can often be performed remotely or in an office setting, focusing on improving accessibility for all users. Many jobs suitable for individuals who cannot walk include roles in customer service, remote administrative work, data entry, software testing, and roles that require strong communication or technical skills, often with accommodations or adaptive tools. It is important to consider positions that offer flexible work environments and accessible technology options.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Accessibility Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accessibility Intern, you need a foundational understanding of accessibility standards (such as WCAG), basic web development knowledge (HTML, CSS, ARIA), and a commitment to inclusive design. Familiarity with assistive technologies (like screen readers), accessibility evaluation tools, and relevant certifications such as IAAP’s CPACC can be advantageous. Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and advocate for accessibility best practices. These skills ensure digital content and products are accessible to all users, supporting legal compliance and enhancing user experience.

What is the highest paying intern job?

The highest paying intern jobs are often in fields like technology, finance, and engineering, with roles such as software engineering interns or investment banking interns offering salaries that can exceed $30 per hour or more. These positions typically require specialized skills, relevant coursework, or prior experience, and may include additional benefits or stipends depending on the company and location.

What types of projects or tasks can an Accessibility Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As an Accessibility Intern, you can expect to participate in a variety of projects that support making digital products and services more accessible to people with disabilities. Typical tasks might include evaluating websites or applications for accessibility compliance, assisting in the creation of accessible documents, and helping to test with assistive technologies like screen readers. You may also collaborate with designers and developers to provide recommendations for enhancing accessibility and contribute to training materials or awareness initiatives. This role offers a hands-on introduction to accessibility standards and best practices within a supportive team environment.

Are interns covered under ADA?

Accessibility Interns, like other interns, are generally covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) if they are considered employees or if the internship is paid. The ADA requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities, regardless of employment status, but coverage can vary based on the nature of the internship and local laws.

What does an accessibility specialist do?

An accessibility intern supports the development and testing of digital content to ensure it is usable by people with disabilities. They may review websites, applications, or documents for compliance with accessibility standards like WCAG and assist with implementing accessible design features using tools such as screen readers and assistive technologies.
