Accessibility Intern information

What does an accessibility intern do?

An Accessibility Intern assists organizations in making their digital content, products, and environments more accessible to people with disabilities. Their responsibilities often include testing websites and applications for accessibility issues, documenting findings, and suggesting improvements based on guidelines like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). They may also help develop accessible documents, participate in user research with individuals with disabilities, and support training initiatives. This role is a great entry point for learning about inclusive design and the legal and ethical considerations of accessibility.

What types of projects or tasks can an accessibility intern expect to work on during their internship?

As an Accessibility Intern, you can expect to participate in a variety of projects that support making digital products and services more accessible to people with disabilities. Typical tasks might include evaluating websites or applications for accessibility compliance, assisting in the creation of accessible documents, and helping to test with assistive technologies like screen readers. You may also collaborate with designers and developers to provide recommendations for enhancing accessibility and contribute to training materials or awareness initiatives. This role offers a hands-on introduction to accessibility standards and best practices within a supportive team environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an accessibility intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accessibility Intern, you need a foundational understanding of accessibility standards (such as WCAG), basic web development knowledge (HTML, CSS, ARIA), and a commitment to inclusive design. Familiarity with assistive technologies (like screen readers), accessibility evaluation tools, and relevant certifications such as IAAP’s CPACC can be advantageous. Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and advocate for accessibility best practices. These skills ensure digital content and products are accessible to all users, supporting legal compliance and enhancing user experience.
