POSITION SUMMARY

The Upper/Middle School teacher has full responsibility for teaching courses in their subject area (possibly including advanced classes and electives). The ideal candidate may also be qualified to teach in additional areas.

The job start date is 8/7/24. This is a full-time, ten-month, benefits-eligible position.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

● Candidates must agree with the school's mission, vision, core values, and Statement of Faith.

● Qualified candidates will understand the need to develop a biblical worldview in students by creating an excellent, engaging, relational, biblically-integrated, and joy-filled learning environment.

● Teach assigned courses. Classes may change slightly from year to year.

● Incorporate a variety of instructional aids, methods, and materials (such as hands-on, exploration, discovery, and all manner of student writing, presentation and dialogue) that will provide creative ways to reach students on multiple levels: spiritual, mental, physical, social, and emotional.

● Integrate technology into classroom lessons.

● Use homework effectively for practice, review, enrichment or project work, not for busy work.

● Foster attitudes that will assist students in becoming responsible and respectful students.

● Assess the learning of students on a weekly basis and provide updated feedback through Google Classroom and Renweb, as well as progress reports as required to students, parents, and administration.

● Communicate early notice of progress deficiencies and provide intervention plans for students so they are able to achieve reasonable mastery of the subject.

● Keep proper discipline in the classroom, on the school premises and on field trips to create a nurturing learning environment.

● Help maintain a clean, organized and purposeful classroom to support student learning.

● Maintain weekly accurate records in FACTS of each student’s academic progress.

● Attend and participate in scheduled committee meetings, parent conferences, staff meetings, in-house professional development, devotions, and activities.

● Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Upper School and across divisions.

● Submit lesson plans weekly

 

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS

 

● Show willingness to help plan activities, chaperone Windy Gap and field trips as able.

● Support after-school activities and programs (e.g. athletics, concerts, theater and class programs) when possible to cultivate relationships.

● Help support and/or lead College Connect, small groups, Senior Project, or other programs. (Not first year)

● Supervise students in the classroom, on the grounds, and on field trips or related experiences outside of class.

 

SPECIFIC JOB SKILL SET

● Strong interpersonal communication skills with students, parents,and colleagues. Oakbrook teachers must care deeply for young people, be adept at interacting with parents, and contribute to a warm and supportive faculty.

● Enjoyment from working with teenagers and a thorough understanding of the specific

developmental needs of high school students

● Energy, empathy, flexibility, and collaboration

● Effective organization

● Ability to use a variety of assessment techniques along with strong instruction and classroom-management

● Experience with Learning Management Systems, the Google Suite of tools, and a variety of technological resources that can be used to support teaching

● Understanding of pedagogy and experiential learning practices

● Active promotion and support of Oakbrook in the classroom, with parents, and in the community at large

● Teachable spirit and ability to take criticism with a willingness to learn and grow

● Innovative thinking and problem-solving

● Confidentiality in all school matters

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

● Bachelor's degree required

● Teaching experience strongly recommended; experience in secondary education preferred

● Certification Preferred
