Job Description

Job Summary

The Design Engineer I, designs and analyzes new products based on customer requirements and improves upon the performance and design of existing products.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The following is a list of duties required of the Design Engineer I. Duties performed with supervision and guidance from more experienced design engineers. Additional tasks and responsibilities may be required as needed.

· Create and finalize models for production per Spika standards and best practices

· Work with potential customers to understand and document project requirements

· Evaluate customer requirements and create conceptual models, drawings, BOM’s and SOW’s for proposals

of limited scope and complexity

· Lead and participate in design reviews required by customers as part of the design process

· Evaluate own and other’s designs for manufacturability, soundness of design, compliance with customer requirements, and compliance with Spika standards

· Perform structural analysis and create engineering reports with guidance by experienced design engineers

· Monitor owned projects through drafting, production, and beyond to facilitate resolution of issues

· Work to defined project schedules and manage workload to meet critical milestones

· Perform ROM estimation for design hours and monitor hours accordingly

· Rapidly resolve engineering change orders on projects and assist troubleshooting of fabrication issues

· Identify and develop test, inspection, and verification requirements and methodologies for products

· Identify and develop operational, maintenance, and safety requirements and instructions for products

· Create 2D drawings and details of modules as defined by Spika and/or customer standards and procedures

· May create DXF files and accompanying PDF files for submission to outsourced processors

· Work closely with project manager/coordinator

· Participate in project reviews to improve future designs

· Evaluate existing models and designs and identify areas of improvement

· Investigate and evaluate product failures and recommend solutions

· Work with other departments to develop an understanding of how design decisions impact those areas, such as purchasing and inventory, manufacturing, and quality control

· May provide technical support to the Sales Department

 

Competencies

To perform this job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

· Working knowledge of computer aided design software (Solidworks preferred)

· Strong understanding of structural engineering, including the ability to analyze models for strength using Simulation as well as hand calculations, and ability to create summarized analysis reports

· Understanding of sound design and engineering principles and practices, exhibiting skill and competence in functionality, aesthetics, balance, and manufacturability

· Ability to break down problems into components and recognize interrelationships; ability to make sound, well-informed, and objective decisions

· Ability to compare data, information, and input from a variety of sources to draw conclusions; ability to take action that is consistent with available facts, constraints, and probable consequences.

· Ability to use creativity and imagination to develop new insights into situations and apply new solutions to problems

Education or Experience

Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology or similar from four-year college or university. Entry level experience of 0 to 1+ years.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

Reasoning Abilities

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills

Proficiency in SolidWorks and Microsoft Office.
