What Are the Qualifications to Get a Job in Product Design?

The qualifications to get a job in product design depend on your specific responsibilities and position. Prototype designers and drafters typically need a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related subject, although some drafters can begin with an associate degree or specialist knowledge of AutoCAD. Production designers may need experience or a bachelor’s degree in materials science, such as chemistry or chemical engineering, which helps them choose the appropriate materials for a product. Important skills include strong technical ability and interpersonal communication.

How do product designers typically collaborate with engineers and product managers during the development process?

Product designers work closely with engineers and product managers throughout the product development cycle. Early on, designers participate in brainstorming sessions and user research to define product requirements alongside product managers. As concepts are developed, designers create wireframes and prototypes, sharing them with engineers to ensure technical feasibility and alignment with business goals. Regular feedback loops, design reviews, and cross-functional meetings are common, allowing designers to refine their work based on input from both technical and strategic perspectives. This collaborative approach helps ensure the end product is user-centered, technically sound, and aligned with company objectives.

What is the difference between Product Design vs UX Design?

AspectProduct DesignUX Design
FocusHolistic approach including user experience, visual design, and product strategyPrimarily focuses on user experience, usability, and interaction design
SkillsDesign, prototyping, user research, product managementUser research, wireframing, usability testing, interaction design
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with product managers, developers, and marketing teamsWorks closely with users, developers, and UI designers
Common UsageUsed across tech companies, startups, and product teamsCommonly used in digital product development and user-centered design

Product Design encompasses a broad scope, including user experience, visual aesthetics, and overall product strategy. UX Design is more specialized, focusing on creating intuitive and effective user experiences. While both roles overlap, Product Designers often handle a wider range of responsibilities, integrating business goals with user needs, whereas UX Designers concentrate on optimizing usability and interaction.

What is product design?

Product design is the process of identifying market opportunities, defining problems, and developing innovative solutions in the form of physical or digital products. It involves understanding user needs, creating prototypes, and working closely with engineering, marketing, and manufacturing teams to bring ideas to life. Product designers combine creativity, technical skills, and user-centered thinking to ensure that products are both functional and visually appealing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Product Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Designer, you need proficiency in user-centered design, prototyping, and visual communication, often backed by a degree in design or related experience. Familiarity with design tools like Figma, Sketch, or Adobe Creative Suite and experience with user research and testing platforms are typical requirements. Strong collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving skills help product designers translate user needs into effective solutions within cross-functional teams. These skills ensure that products are both aesthetically pleasing and functional, meeting user expectations and business goals.

Latent

Job description

About Latent
Latent is building the intelligence infrastructure for healthcare. Our clinical AI platform helps health systems streamline medication access by automating complex workflows - prior authorizations, appeals, and 340B compliance. By surfacing relevant clinical evidence from EHR data, we reduce administrative burden and accelerate time-to-therapy for patients.
We recently raised an $80M Series A co-led by Spark Capital and Transformation Capital, with participation from General Catalyst, McKesson Ventures, Y Combinator, and Conviction. We serve 2M+ patients across 45+ of the nation's leading health systems - including Yale New Haven, Mount Sinai, UCSF, Ochsner, and Vanderbilt.
We move fast, operate with high ownership, and build products that directly improve patient care. We're looking for a Product Designer to shape the next generation of clinical AI products powering healthcare.
The Role
As we build the design function at Latent, You'll join a growing design function and own design end to end, from early problem framing through shipped product. You'll work directly with engineering, product, and customers to design enterprise software that makes complex clinical workflows feel simple.
What You'll Do
Product Design & Ownership
  • Own the full design process from discovery through delivery for core product areas
  • Make smart tradeoffs between speed and polish to keep shipping without sacrificing craft

Enterprise & Workflow Design
  • Design complex, multi-user workflows for clinical and operational teams at large health systems
  • Translate dense healthcare processes into clear, intuitive product experiences
  • Handle edge cases, permissions, and system states that come with enterprise software

Discovery & Customer Insight
  • Work directly with healthcare customers to understand clinical workflows and pain points
  • Turn ambiguous problems into clear product direction
  • Balance user needs with long-term product vision

Design Foundations
  • Establish design standards and processes that grow with the team
  • Partner closely with engineering on implementation quality and handoffs
What We're Looking For
  • Experience:
  • Enterprise Experience: Has designed complex workflows, multi-user systems, and operationally dense software. Knows how to make powerful tools feel simple
  • End-to-End Ownership: Has built products from scratch. Defined what to build, not just designed within existing systems and patterns
  • Self-Directed: Comfortable with ambiguity and able to drive from problem to shipped product without heavy process or hand-holding
  • Fast + High Craft: Ships quickly without letting the details slip. Knows where to cut scope and where to hold the line on quality
  • Product Thinking: Cares about what we build and why. Has opinions about product direction, not just UI
  • Collaboration: Thrive in cross-functional environments; Collaborate across engineering, product, and GTM.Can articulate design decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Startup Mindset: Comfortable in fast-paced, ambiguous environments - adaptable, high-ownership, and able to maintain momentum through change
Nice to Have
  • Experience with AI-powered or data-driven products
  • Familiarity with healthcare, EHRs, or clinical systems
  • Background in startups or high-growth environments (seed to Series A)
  • Technical fluency is a plus
  • Experience building products for operational or workflow-driven use cases
  • Uses AI tools in their workflow and is always looking for ways to move faster with them
Why Join Latent
  • Work on mission-critical problems at the intersection of AI and healthcare
  • Ship products that directly improve patient access to life-saving medications
  • Shape how design works at Latent as the team grows
  • High ownership and the opportunity to shape clinical AI products used by the nation's leading health systems
