Summary
Responsible for installing and maintaining the distribution of electric power. This includes wiring and conduit work in connection with shops, building and yards and all other work recognized as M of W electricians work. 

Responsibilities:
Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
•    Maintenance of various electrical facilities on the Long Island Rail Road, including stations, welfare facilities, office buildings and bridges.
•    Installation of electrical construction projects, working directly with other departments and contractors.
•    Support lighting and electrical requirements of various departments and contractors.
•    Trouble-shoot electrical circuits.
•    Using Multimeters/test equipment 

Qualifications
•    A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC) approved by a State's Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.
•    Minimum of 5 years previous related experience in electrical construction and maintenance.
•    Basic knowledge of Conduit bending
•    Basic Knowledge of motor and lighting controls 
•    Ability to lift a 70-lb. piece of material/equipment.
•    Knowledge of the National Electric Codes and the ability to read and work from blueprints is required.
•    Must attain a passing grade in a written and practical test.
•    Valid driver's license and must be able to obtain and maintain a CDL Class B driver’s license. 

Preferred/Desirable Skills/Qualifications:
•    Possession of a Nassau/Suffolk and/or New York City electrical license. 

Wage Progression
If hired prior to 9/24/14:
70% - 1st   240 days of compensated service ($29.821)
75% - 2nd 240 days of compensated service ($31.951)
80% - 3rd 240 days of compensated service ($34.081)
90% - 4th 240 days of compensated service ($38.341)
95% - 5th 240 days of compensated service ($40.471)
100% - After 1,200 days of compensated service ($42.601) 

If hired after 9/24/14:
70% - 1st   240 days of compensated service ($29.821)
70% - 2nd 240 days of compensated service ($29.821)
75% - 3rd 240 days of compensated service ($31.951)
80% - 4th 240 days of compensated service ($34.081)
90% - 5th 240 days of compensated service ($38.341)
90% - 6th 240 days of compensated service ($38.341)
95% - 7th 240 days of compensated service ($40.471)
100% - After 1,680 days of compensated service ($42.601) 

However, candidates who meet one or more of the criteria listed below will qualify for the expedited wage progression for Journeymen: 

  • Four years of full-time experience as an electrical worker, including the following jobs and titles and industries
  • Electrical, Electronics or Communications Worker in the Armed Forces
  • Electrician, including commercial, residential, and low voltage
  • Utility or Power Plant Electrical Worker
  • Electronics, Communications or Computer Technician/Engineer
  • Electrical Apprentice or Electrical Helper
  • Automotive Electronic Technician, with ASE certification.
  • Possess or completion of the following educational degrees, apprenticeships or trade program certifications, with required practical work experience accompanied thereto for a total of four years:
  • A four-year bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology or associated Electrical field from an accredited college or university.
  • A two-year associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology or associated Electrical field from an accredited college plus two years of full-time experience performing electrical work.
  • A trade (vocational) school certificate n Electrical Technology or associated electrical field, of which completion requires at least one year of classroom training; plus three years of full-time experience as an electrical worker.
  • Completion of at least four years of an Electrical Apprenticeship Program.
  • Completion of at least two years of a full-time Electrical Apprenticeship Program, plus two years of full-time experience as an electrical worker.

Wage Progression: 

First 365 Calendar Days:            80% 

Second 365 Calendar Days:      85% 

After 730 Calendar Days:          100% 

Other Information
In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include, but is not limited to, a prescreening assessment (i.e., physical, written and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance. Not all qualified applicants are guaranteed an interview due to the competitive selection process. A medical examination and safety sensitive drug/alcohol test may also be required.
