Charles R. Drew University is located in the Watts-Willowbrook area of south Los Angeles and was founded in 1966 in the wake of the Watts uprising. CDU was founded to address inadequate medical care in the region and to provide equitable medical education opportunities for under-represented students.

CDU offers the only historically black Doctor of Medicine program west of the Mississippi and is strongly invested in the local and regional community. The university leads multiple partnerships and programs to provide equitable healthcare resources in a variety of south Los Angeles neighborhoods.

The Department of Health and Life Sciences at the College of Science and Health (DHLS) seeks to hire a full-time faculty at the rank of assistant professor. The primary responsibility is to conduct research but may be involved in teaching and service. The assistant professor will mentor students in research, provide academic and career advising, and participate in recruitment and retention activities. The assistant professor position reports to the Chair of the DHLS.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research projects in the designated field to advance knowledge.
  • Develop and preparation of research proposals, including experimental design, budgeting, and timeline planning.
  • Prepare and submit grant proposals to secure external funding for research projects, ensuring financial support for ongoing and future research initiatives.
  • Publish research findings in reputable academic journals and conferences, disseminating results actively.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to undergraduates and graduate students, fostering their professional development and involvement in research projects.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and researchers within and outside the institution to encourage interdisciplinary research and knowledge exchange.
  • Deliver lectures, seminars, or workshops, sharing expertise with undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Analyze research data using appropriate methodologies, statistical tools, and software and interpret findings accurately.
  • Present research findings at national and international conferences, engaging in academic discourse and networking with peers in the field.
  • Prioritize the responsible and ethical conduct of research while adhering to ethical standards and guidelines during research activities.
  • Participate in the academic and career advisement of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Participate in professional and community service.
  • Participate in faculty development activities, such as continuing education seminars, workshops, meetings, etc., to keep abreast of current developments within the profession.
  • Use of course management system (Blackboard/WebCT) as a repository for course documents.
  • Participates in DHLS Department, College, and University committees as assigned.
  • Participates in the ongoing planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the Department programs.
  • Supports and contributes to the College's strategic mission, vision, and goals.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Chair of the DHLS.

EDUCATION:

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the field of Biomedical Sciences from an accredited program,

EXPERIENCE:

  • A track record of research accomplishments and publications in peer-reviewed journals related to the field of expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure research funding through grant proposals from government agencies, foundations, or other sources.
  • Prior experience in teaching, mentoring, or advising undergraduate or graduate students is a plus.

SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated commitment to service in underserved communities.
  • Commitment to student learning outcomes and evidence-based teaching practices.
  • Commitment to and support of the CDU and the DHLS missions.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of students.
  • A demonstrated sensitivity to students with diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching, research, and community service.
  • Knowledge of computers and willingness to use multimedia instructional materials and computer-based educational platforms (Smart Board, Blackboard, and the university course management system Power Campus)
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong computer software skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a collegial working relationship with faculty and students.
  • Demonstrated willingness to perform and a commitment to extra-curricular responsibilities on behalf of the program, college, and University.
