Job Description

Job Title: Director of Risk Management & Safety

Department: Risk Management

Reports To: Chief Executive Officer

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Summary: The Director of Risk Management & Safety is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, and directing the activities of the Company’s Risk Management and Safety Programs. This position is responsible for the identification, evaluation of risk, and selection of methods to handle all risk exposures which would result in human, physical, or financial loss to the Company. This position works closely with Senior Executives, insurance representatives, and staff in implementing new programs, upgrading existing programs, and in formulating recommendations to Senior Management on rules and procedures. The Director of Risk Management and Safety plans, organizes, coordinates and directs all property/casualty, worker’s compensation, security, and safety programs for the Company.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manages a team of Safety, Risk and Compliance Managers to ensure that they perform their duties effectively
  • Oversees management of a team of field safety inspectors and trainers
  • Assumes full management responsibility for all safety and risk management programs, services, and activities, including property and liability, loss control, workers’ compensation, and safety compliance programs
  • Develops overall plan and programs that identify, measure and monitor all risk and safety exposures. Selects and recommends appropriate risk and safety management controls for all exposure to loss.
  • Confers and corresponds with insurance representatives and Senior Executives concerning insurance program development, including recommending coverages, deductibles, limits etc. that provide the maximum protection while achieving the highest value.
  • Determines appropriate safety equipment and safe work practices to be employed on specific jobs based on OSHA and Company standards and implements accordingly
  • Manages policy renewals, budget planning, risk minimization programs, and prevention programs
  • Coordinates, directs, and participates in the investigation and response to workers’ compensation claims filed against the Company; evaluates claims and approves or recommends settlement or litigation options based on interpretation and application of established laws and investigative results; develops and implements procedures for claim administration; attends related depositions and hearings
  • Monitors changes in laws, regulations, and technology that may affect District or program operations; implements policy and procedural changes as required
  • Responsible for the preparation of operational and risk and safety reports for Senior Executives analysis
  • Prepares studies and analysis of industrial accident causes and hazards to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies
  • Prepares and evaluates insurances clauses for RFPs, bids and contracts and reviews Certificates of Insurance associated with contracts, purchase orders and RFP/bid responses to ensure they meet required coverage and limits.
  • Oversees the Inspections of organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented
  • Keeps abreast of, advises Senior Management and insures compliance with State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, such as OSHA, ADA, and the DOT Commercial Drivers’ Licensing (CDL) program, as well as the Company’s safety regulations and standards.
  • Reviews plans and specifications for major equipment slated for purchase and proposed facility modifications for safety requirements.
  • Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs
  • Develops and prepares Company’s safety rules, ensures their communication to those affected, and audits for compliance.
  • All other duties as required

Supervisory Job Duties:

  • Carries out supervisory duties in accordance with the Company’s objectives, policies, and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: planning, assigning, and directing work, interviewing, hiring, training, evaluating performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing employee concerns, and partnering with HR to resolve escalated employee matters.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Accounting and 7-10 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

  • At least 10 years of Safety Management experience or; at least 7 years of Safety Management experience combined with safety certifications consisting of CSP or CIH
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of the avoidance, reduction, retention, and transfer of risk as it relates to a large telecommunications organization with geographically dispersed facilities and operations.
  • Thorough knowledge of the insurance industry and of all fields of insurance as well as detailed aspects of insurance and self-insurance management.
  • Thorough knowledge of insurance laws in U.S.

Technical Skills:

  • Microsoft Office proficiency (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Smart Sheets)
  • Must be able to document and present work in a clear and concise manner
  • Knowledge of Background Screening Platforms and/or Vendors preferred, but not required
  • Knowledge of Database software; Internet software; Payroll software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software

Soft Skills:

  • Ability to motivate, lead, teach and train on proper work and safety procedures
  • Skilled in researching and resolving complex problems in order to ensure compliance
  • Ability to consistently demonstrate sound ethics and judgment
  • Above average decision making and problem solving skills
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal ,verbal and written communication skills

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass pre-employment screening that includes background and drug testing
  • Individuals must have a valid driver’s license and driving record meeting the company policy conditions
  • Travel up sporadically, including short notice travel. Travel may include local site travel or national travel depending on training needs
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time on varied surfaces
  • May be required to work long and unpredictable hours
  • Sitting at a desk for 6-8 hours a day
  • Working on a computer for 6-8 hours a day
