Job Description
The role of Principal Scientist is responsible for the technological aspects of projects aimed at improving the quality of existing products or developing new ones within specific product groups or business channels.
This position requires organizing and implementing trials from conceptual stages through to the end of projects to achieve the goals defined by project teams.
Key responsibilities for this position cover a range of duties, including providing technical knowledge on a variety of projects, proposing ideas for new products, and proposing and organizing pilot plant or plant trials.
The Principal Scientist is also responsible for interpreting the results of these trials and assisting with process development.
They must write well-structured, thorough reports with proper conclusions and recommendations.
Other duties include working with plant and engineering teams in conducting feasibility studies pertaining to new product development and product improvement.
Building strong relationships with other departments like Marketing, Purchasing, Packaging, Manufacturing, QA, and Legal is also crucial. Continually exploring and evaluating ways to improve all aspects of production, including raw materials, production techniques, specifications, packaging, shelf life, and more, is essential.
The Principal Scientist must also participate in Quality Assurance activities involving any number of issues or concerns, such as HACCP analysis, good manufacturing practices, labeling, and standards of identity, among others.
The successful candidate will coordinate all support activities, maintain complex technical notes and records of activity, ensure the confidentiality of our process, information, and participate in patent searches to protect company business.
Additionally, they will establish and maintain contact within the R&D company network, including developing products for other countries and subsidiaries or sharing data, information, and knowledge with other teams. Developing and maintaining both industry and academic contacts to remain current in regard to technical developments is also a requirement.
Qualifications
The Principal Scientist must have a Master's degree (M.S.) or equivalent in Dairy or Food Science, with 5-10 years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
They should have strong cheese process knowledge, food technology knowledge (microbiology/physics/biochemistry/process), and mathematics knowledge, including statistics.
Strong communication skills to communicate with other departments and technicians, as well as strong computer skills with a working knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for report writing and presentations, are also a must.
The position requires travel for plant trials, training, focus groups type settings, suppliers visits, etc., as needed, with travel intensity up to 30% of the time.
