Job Description

Brown Physicians, Inc (BPI) is a community-based not-for-profit multi-specialty medical practice group founded and led by faculty affiliated with the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. A physician-led collaborative, BPI is comprised of the following foundations: Brown Dermatology, Brown Emergency Medicine, Brown Medicine, Brown Neurology, Brown Urology and Brown Surgical Associates.

This key position is with Brown Surgical Associates (BSA) which is one of Rhode Island’s largest multidisciplinary surgical groups and a founding member of BPI. Our 50+ surgeons are recognized for their experience in highly specialized areas of surgery.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) will provide the surgical patient and their family with continuity of care from the time of initial hospital admission through the outpatient experience. The APP will act as an integral part of the surgical service. The APP will also act as an educator and a liaison to other health care providers providing care across the care continuum. This is a Part-Time (24 hour) position located at The Miriam Hospital within the Specialty Care Unit. The SCU is an intermediate level care facility for medical and surgical patients. Hours may be worked as (1) 24-hour shift or (2) 12-hour shifts per week. Approximately one weekend per month and Holiday rotation required.

Chief of Service - Miriam


Principal duties and responsibilities:

  1. Acts as an integral member of the surgical service for patients on the inpatient surgical service (both the ICU and surgical stepdown) to include the following: conducting history and physical exams, ordering and interpreting lab tests, prescribing medications, developing and monitoring patient treatment plans, making appropriate referrals to other specialists, and prescribing and ordering appropriate treatment modalities.
  2. Performs procedures, including but not limited to: peripheral IV access, central venous access, PICC line placement, repair of lacerations, incision/drainage/washout/debridement of wounds, tube thoracostomy, tracheostomy changes, arterial catheter placement, removal of drains/sutures/staples, placement and removal of N-G tubes/N-D tubes/foley catheters, and assisting with surgery consistent with institutional processes.
  3. Collaborates with unit teachers and clinical nurse specialists to provide education to nurses in the patient care units, and serves as a preceptor for medical students, and other APP students.
  4. Treats each person with respect and dignity.
  5. Participates in research studies and projects.
  6. Obtains Human Subjects Protection training.
  7. Obtains training in HIPAA compliance and all other applicable state and federal privacy laws.
  8. Establishes annual development goals in collaboration with physicians on the surgical service.
  9. Prepares health education materials for patients and their families.
  10. Attends continued education offerings and obtains all continuing education credits required to maintain licensure.
  11. Maintains ACLS certification.
  12. Participates in multidisciplinary meetings relating to surgery.

Qualifications:

  1. Current Rhode Island licensure as a Certified Registered PA/NP
  2. Current DEA licensure
  3. Strong interpersonal skills.
  4. At least one year of PA/NP experience is preferred.
  5. Employees are required to be vaccinated against Covid as a condition of employment.
